split screen mayhem!

Post by Bebop0083 » Mon Jul 26, 2004 12:09 am

ive been trying to get this effect to work for some time now. ive been trying in both Premiere Pro and Vegas 4. ive come so close to getting it in Vegas but i dont know what the deal is. i expand the track layers and bring the second clip on to track B and use the arrows to achieve the split screen effect. i can never get the split screen to stay expect when im moving the clip. in Premiere Pro i tried using a transform effect and cliping it which kinda works but its not the way i really want to achieve the effect. ive read all kinds of tutorials and guides for this effect but they dont really help me much. im also trying to do a side ways split screen in Vegas. i need some help with that. im not sure but i dont think in Premiere Pro i can expand the track layers. im using a trail version of Premiere Pro btw. i was trying to get it to work in Vegas but its not helping me so i dl PP trail to see if it could help me but it isnt. if any one could help me out id appreciate it. this effect has been bugging me for at least a week and a half.

Premiere Pro doesn't have A and B layers for any video track, unlike previous versions of Premiere which had Video 1A and 1B.

The Garbage Matte plus appropriate motion settings should be all you need...

Vegas 5 added some basic 3d support, and thats about it... A more accurate list of changes could be found on the vegas website... which i'm too lazy to google right now.

Vegas 5 - Vegas 4 comparison chart

Split screening in Vegas:

1. Garbage matte-ing. Right click the clip, select Event Pan/Crop. Un-click Stretch to fill frame. Deselect Lock aspect ratio. Deselect Size about center. Then drag one of the blue squares. The clip on the lower track will appear. This is the simplest method if you only need a left-right or top-bottom split. You can also tilt the split line to some degree.

2. Cookie cutting (!). This is more of a picture-in-picture effect, but it might work for you. Right click the clip, select Video FX, add the Cookie Cutter effect. For Shape, select Rectangle. Decrease the size until you see the effect. Then change the center of the cutout left or right. You can also use the pan/crop window to move the clip within the cutout window.

3. Matte. Add a track above the clip. Open the Media Generators - Color Gradient window. Drag Linear White to Black to the upper track. Then click the Compositing arrow at the far left side of the lower track (this is required for a black/white matte to do its masking thing). Adjust parameters to suit. These parameters are tricky to adjust. You might want to just create a picture (white on one side, black on the other) and put that on the upper track instead.

Methods 2 & 3 allow you to feather the boundary if you wish.

BTW, if you want a split screen throughout the entire video (i.e. not just a small piece), you can use either method 1 or 2 by applying the technique to the entire track instead of each individual clip.

After a night to think it over, this is easier than I thought.

With one clip above another, drop the cookie cutter effect on the top clip. Set the shape to Rectangle. Set Center X to 0.000. That's it. This will be a 50-50 split; a different value will change the proportion.

For a top-bottom split, set Center Y to 0 instead of X.

Change the Method option if you want to swap what's in the windows.

Try setting another Shape for different boundaries (curved or slanted).

If the window isn't showing what you want, use the Pan/Crop window to move the clip around.
