i have a 3:45 song in x-ms-asf that is only 575 kilobytes. another song is 5:30 and only 800 kilobytes. the quality is very good. what have i stumbled onto? normally the file size would be much larger?

Sounds like a media link.

Sort of like the shortcuts you get on your computer, but they are shortcuts to audio on a webserver.

But I'm guessing the filesize is in bytes not kilobytes. Something that small for something that long will sound terrible, we're talking around 20kbs for the 5:30min file.

I'd consider very good quality around about 160 - 224 kbs. I'd say excellent (read not perfect) at 320kbs and normal good quality at 128kbs.

Try opening the file offline, see if it works, if it does I'll be surprised. Send it to me and I'll check it out, sounds interesting.
