It's why they're not needed.

So you really think that every single compatibility bug has been found and fixed?
Actually, yes.
Obviously if you try to use things that (say) an old OpenDivX decoder wouldn't know how to cope with then of course your file won't work in said decoder, but if you keep your encoding parameters within reason things should work just fine.
If you do find a bug, well, then, report it. I'm sure the XviD developers would love to know.
