AVI format
For some odd reason, I always get errors when I try to play AVI files. I know some of them have different codecs, so they can't be played in certain players, but I try them in all three players, Windows Media Player, RealOne, and DIVX. How come they never work? Usually, the player can play the audio and not the video, or vice versa, and sometimes it doesn't play it at all. Weird.....

You are probably missing the codec required for playback of those AVIs. What is the error message?
Inmatrix (the people behind ZoomPlayer) have a good guide on setting up your computer for video playback.

Agreed. You probably need more current codecs. It's hard to tell without us knowing what the error message is or if there is anything special about the source of the .avi itself. Any Windows application should play .avi files. Generally when they don't, you need updates.
Windows Media Player should play those files. Check and see if you have version 9 of Windows Media Player. You can do this by selecting 'Help' and then 'About Windows Media Player.' If you don't have version 9, go back to help and select 'Check For Updates.' WMP should then download version 9 and any other updates from the internet. That should bring you up to date on all the latest Windows video codecs.
If that doesn't work you may need the Microsoft Mpeg 4 video codec. Unfourtunately Microsoft does not seem to distibute this codec for some reason. The prescence of this codec can be verified by going to your Windows Device Manager. Select Sound Video and Game Controllers, Video Codec, Properties. If you don't have that codec, the next best thing I can recommend is loading Divx over maybe even that Gordian Knot codec. I would suggest caution in using a third party codec.
