Xvid codec

Post by Alpha_Hazard » Mon Sep 08, 2003 5:48 pm

What's the deal with the Xvid codec, why do people use it, it's not compatible with DivX 5, so whenever I use it, I have to uninstall it in order to play any other videos, Is it possible I just have the wrong version or what?

It is compatible with divx5 if people set the encoding settings correctly.

If they don't, then that's what they get for not following the guides :P

What are you talking about? Xvid and Divx work completely seperate to my knowledge. It's the encoders of files that choose to have Xvid decoded through Divx for some reason.

The fourcc determines what decoder decodes what, and in the case of DIVX, XVID, DX50, they should be interchangeable for all intents and purposes. Sure Xvid and DivX 5 are different codecs, but they both adhere to the same standards body, meaning the decoders and encoders should be cross-compatible.
In fact, if things were done right, you'd never be able to tell what mpeg 4 encoder encoded what, but thanks to our brilliant system of mpeg4+mp3+avi=omgtroflmovi things are all screwed up.

I used your guides for my latest video, and followed it TO THE LETTER. Fucked my video up when I used XviD to compress it because somehow it was decompressing with DivX 4 on everyones computer bar mine, and it was smiring. I say take a closer look at it and maybe even ad an addendum to the guide warning of this possible hitch. Other than that, bloody excellent guide. I actually understand some of the finer details of editing now.

Uh, it's supposed to decompress with a DivX4 filter if you follow the guide.

DIVX fourcc = OpenDivX, i.e. DivX4

...and if you use the options specified in the guide you're fine.

If it's opening on your computer incorrectly, then your computer is misconfigured, and there really doesn't need to be a section in the guide about that. The guide deals with content production, not content consumption.

Thats the odd thing. It was operating on my computer correctly, but incorrectly on anyone who downloaded it. post-it said that was impossible, till he checked it again and realised that it was doing exactly what I said it was. Anyway, it doesn't matter now, I have an mpeg1 version that should work.
