For Windows Movie Maker to segment clips automatically, you must check the "Create clips for video files" option in the Import File menu. Go to File - Import into Collections, and you'll see this option at the bottom of the window. I'm assuming that you have the new WMM, a.k.a. WMM2. For the old WMM, I suggest gonig into the Help Topics and searching for "create clips", or a similar term (if this method doesn't work). In WMM, you can also select the imported video and go to Tools - Create Clips. This should segment the footage for you.

About the black screen popping up during play, I'm not really sure why that's happening.. It may be that you're using DivX or some other bad codec to edit with. Try converting the footage using a lossless codec such as huffyuv, or maybe a lossy one like DV. Otherwise I'm not much help with this problem.

WMM can't comprehend DivX encoded avi files, much like Premiere. My guess is that you're using downloaded footage (you don't have to deny or confirm). Anyhow, try running your footage through TMPGenc and importing the MPEG into WMM.
