Ok, it would help if you would tell us how long and what type of sound files these are...

Music?

You talking?

What are you currently encoding them in?

Have you heard of MP3? I bet you have. Well if you're already using MP3 that's about as small as you're going to get it.

There are some other options, such as Ogg, RealAudio. But you need to explain more on your problem before we can help.

well, make them mono, and lower the bitrate below 96 kps at least and make it variable.

see how low that gets it, and lower the bitrate if its not small enough

lowering the sampling rate will help a bit when encoding at real low bitrates too.

Tho, mp3 kinda sucks at low bitrates. If you need to go lower use something like ogg vorbis (good) or realaudio 8 (excellent). RA8 is cool in that you can go down to 32kbps and it won't sound that bad, about on par with 96kbps mp3.

If you are going for extreamly small file sizes, you can't beat Realvideo/audio. Just try pumping your video thru Premiere's RealVideo export, with about 600kbps, and you'll be suprised how low the file size will drop.

Only do this if you really need to though, since RealVideo is generally looked down upon, and isn't that great for those of us with larger res, and wishing to play it back fullscreen.

el incorrecto. Actually all those who say RV9 is bad at higher bitrates are full of it. It beats xvid and wmv9 on the 2 mbps 640x480 clip test I've been screwing around with the last few days.

Also, better to use helix producer than premiere and export to rv9 instead of 8. Tho the audio codecs are the same for both.

I never said anything about it being crappy at higher bitrates. I was talking about it being crappy at lower bitrates when in Full Screen mode. Most all 352x240 avis and MPEGs at least look decent when fullscreened, but RealPlayer really looks bad when fullscreened at a low res.

ohhhh
I interpreted higher res as higher video resolution and not higher monitor resolution.
alles gute sir!
