audio conversion... 44.1 -> 48

Post by Quu » Wed Dec 04, 2002 5:27 pm

ok... here is the problem..

I have a wave file that is 44.1 Khrz (ripped from CD)

I want to convert it to 48 khrz... sounds easy enuf... shold be simple...

except that every way I keep trying to do it... it sounds bad...

I have tried premiere, tmpgenc, and ssrc (from doom9.org)
with ssrc i have tried with three different settings (plain two pass, dither type 1, and dither type 4, pdf type 3) with the last setting being hedious

my problem is when i convert it... the drums sound tinny and the audio in general sounds.... lower quality...

well I dunno why you'd want to convert 44.1 to 48 since in essence thats like converting 512x384 to 640x480 (roughly) but I know resampling (up or down) will lower quality, if its an overall small worsening of quality that could be what to blame it on :/

it is upping the quality...

the reason I am doing it is that DVD is 48 Khrz only.... and this will eventually be a DVD...

so i would rather up sample it when i can controll how it will sound...

ahh point
but its not upping the quality from a 44.1 source, if something is captured at 48 its better but upsampling wont do any good. Anyway I doubt you'll get anything better than what ssrc is already spitting out
hopefully someone can offer better words of wisdom here :/

SoundForge (http://www.sonicfoundry.com) does an asskicking job on conversions. The only problem is the pricetag. I know there used to be a reduced edition 'cuz that's what came with my sound card. There may still be one available for purchase which should knock a couple hundred off the pricetag.

sound forge seams to be the common answer...

a freind of mine has it (he is an audiophile) so i will see what he can do with it...

what is strange is that increading the resolution of the audio should not harm its quality

ok... sound forge 6.0

still changes it slightly... it sounds louder... and the drums are a little more prounounced...

but they are not tinny... and it is the least different of all the methods

its not perfect... but at the moment... I am happy...
