Virtualdub and Premiere can't digest MP4 and MKV files terribly well. Some footage that I'd like to use can only be found in these formats. What's the best way to make these files useable?

Well, I'd obviously prefer to work with .wav files, but all of my .wav files went down with the hard drive that they were on, and my actual CD collection is somewhere in my storage unit.
