I've never personaly used iMovie, but It might have the same thing that Avid has, does it use quicktime to import the video clip? if so then that is why it probably didn't work, you have to use a format that will play in quicktime (very annoying) "These are the people who make it next to impossible ...

did you use a speed up/slow down effect? because that sometimes happened to me when I used movie maker. in the render, I would get to that clip with the speed effect and then it would just stop playing afterwards. That happened when I saved too, so you might have to clip it instead of speeding/slowi...
