MegaCon 2008 AMV contest, hosted by Anime Sushi!

Hey everyone - just wanted you to be aware that Anime Sushi is once again hosting their annual AMV Contest at MegaConvention in Orlando, FL! The convention is from March 7th - March 9th, and the contest will be held on Sunday, March 9th.

Entries are due by February 24th, and must be submitted to the club online (preferably through the Anime Sushi site gallery system).

This is becoming something of a tradition for me at this point.

- What frame rates are acceptable?
- If we submit an MPEG-2, can we submit either interlaced or progressive?
- If we submit an interlaced MPEG-2, is there a preferred field order?
- Is it okay to submit a progressive MPEG-2 at 23.976fps with the 3:2 pulldown flag set?

what are you guys doing to make sure last years disaster of a contest doesn't have a repeat?

I prefer them to be 29.97 since most people are going to be submitting at that framerate, but I'll let you do what you want - they'll all be going to DVD anyway, so MPEG-2 is fanatastic, preferred interlaced, no preference on the field orer... and, yes, its OK to submit a prog.mpeg2 at 23.976 with the 3/2 pulldown flag set... I'll test it with the other videos (which are all basically going to be compressed in Compressor and are going to be assembled as video items linked as independent video items in DVD Studio Pro) and if it doesn't work, I'll let you know. The best assumption you can make is that this is going to be played back from the lowest-tech DVD player imaginable.

Wow, nice man, thanks for the really positively worded question there.

You are welcomed to enter a video. Or not. There was a lot of complaints from a very few people about the contest last year, and I'm terribly sorry that we had a massive equipment issue. I mean that, I REALLY AM SORRY. Holy hell, need I stand on a street corner and scream out my apology? Should we have someone flogged? Will that make you feel better?

I think you must've forgotten that we essentially had 3 (count them, 1, 2, 3) computers go down at once with individual problems and did absolutely EVERYTHING we could to "go on with the show" despite that. After having such massive problems you must realize that by the time everything was there and ready to go, it was either, 1.) Do the show as it sat (thats what I did), or 2.) Not do it.

I think I explained myself very well as to the issues from last year... though I do have a general note: Sometimes AMV contests have technical problems to a fault (this has even become a joke in video or two), and our relatively small and specialized one (up until last year our process of taking submissions was focused on having local editors taking the stage)... done in my spare time with essentially zero funding does what it can to provide a place for AMV Editors to get some floor space at a convention as big as MegaCon.

As for this year, how I'm doing the contest (based on last years experiences) is pretty clear in the instructions, so please read them and see the changes I've made.

How come we only get one submission into the contest? As I recall last year had it's fair share of less than tolerable AMVs. Are you expecting to have that many more entries by switching to online submission?

Not at all - just want everyone to submit one video to be entered into the actual contest portion. The thought is I just want to know specifically which video you want us to judge. I've simply asked that you specify a preference in the past. This is just a method of empowering you to decide which is your entry, and which is for exhibition only. As it says in the instructions, you can submit more videos, just not to be entered into the contest. "Extra" videos will be shown in a separate block, probably before the AMV contest.

Regarding the "less than tolerable AMVs," this contest is open to everyone - amateur and experienced video editors are welcomed. I try not to reject videos and I want to give everyone an opportunity to have their stuff shown to an audience. That isn't going to change. If that is grounds for you avoiding the contest, I'm sorry... but remember, everyone was an amateur at one point.

Do you really have to join the forum to enter an entry? Seems like a waste since I don't really go on forums(of any kind)all the time.
