NPR Airs Segment on AMV's/IronEditor

Post by Fireye » Thu Aug 02, 2007 9:20 am

Heard it on the way in to work this morning, figured I'd post it here! I believe they namedropped a-m-v.org, but I'm not certain, and I can't listen to the segment at work.

Morning Edition, August 2, 2007 · Do-it-yourself music videos are all over the Internet. They've been especially embraced by fans of anime — Japanese animated cartoons. Amateur video editors recently battled in an "Iron Chef" style competition at a Baltimore anime convention.

Poor Neda Ulaby...

One can almost tell she had a hard time trying to wrap her head around such concepts held close and dear to our special geekery. It's funny, though, because you know she's *really* trying to be understanding and sincere.

The good thing about radio, though, is that one doesn't get the visuals that makes you want to shake your head in shame...

...unlike this one report on local news station, WJZ...

(I think we actually scare the mundanes a bit...)

They actually didn't specifically say the 'org by name, just that there was a site where you could find a nearly endless supply of AMVs (she said a number, but I forget what it was). Those who were interviewed made a point of not naming the 'org specifically, just that there were sites on the web devoted to AMVs.

And yes- Jeff's, "Oh crap!?" line totally cracked me up.

I think the number quoted was ~700,000...and looking at the global stats on the main page, I'd say that was pretty much right...

I wonder if a google search really yields the 'org' pretty high on the list...

It does. Search for 'Anime Music Videos' and the 'org is the first result in Google- right before the Wiki entry on AMVs.

Pretty cool. Nice to see this medium getting some exposure.

I'm pretty sure the org was never mentioned. I personally made a very conscious effort to *not* mention the org and I'm pretty sure the rest of us had that mutual understanding as well.

I'll give it a listen later to find how much of a fool I am. Apparently I'm Suberunker...
