Audio Ripping Question

Post by Theory Girl » Wed Sep 14, 2005 11:23 pm

There's a song I'd like to use for an AMV, but it's only available on an internet radio station. Is there a way for me to rip that song, or is it just hopeless?

if the internet radio station has DRM in the audio stream and your soundcard obeys the DRM in the drivers (which most current ones from the year do) then you can't digitally copy...

you'll have to analog record somehow, wether you patch the soundcard back into itself, out to another computer/homeaudio cdr/minidisc whatever.

This method works, just be careful to not have your system's main volume or line-in volume up to high, or you could get feedback.

Are you sure that it's only available on that online station? Most of the radio feeds I've heard aren't that great of quality. You might want to take this into consideration, then double check to see if that song is truly unavailable in another, higher quality, form.

yes, i have a method ...

ANY sound that can come OUT from your computers speakers you can record onto your computer into wav format

this process is VERY simple

but the most important part is that you need a wav editing program that record more than 60 seconds (the standard windows voice recorder will not do)

if you have a creative sound card, i suggest you use the CD that came with your card and install the wave editor there, OR if you have nero, use the wave editor that came with Nero. Or jsut download other wave editors out there.. this process should be simple

NOW...this is the important part...go to Volume Control (little speaker in your taskbar to the right) > File > Properties > Click on the Recording bubble. you should see a list of check boxes, to simply things, just checkmark EVERY box :) haha then press okay. your volume control box should now look a tiny bit different than before and now it should be named Recording Control. you'll see volume bars for Aux, Tv Tuner, CD Player, Line IN, Microphone, Phone Line, Stereo Mix, watever.

Anyways, what you need to do (this is different on all computers) is open your wave editing program and start a song, any song, from like winamp or windows media player, just ANYTHING so that you hear sound coming out of your speakers. Start a recording in your wave editor. you should see equalization bars. NOw....keeping the Recording Control window open, click on the box at the bottom of each volume control column. cycle through each one, until you see the equalization bars on your wave editor jump up and down. The channel that works for me, is usually the Stereo Mix channel. On another computer i have, it is the Aux channel. This is the recording channel for audio playing on your computer.

Presto! for your case, just listen to your radio or streamlined audio and use the same technique to get the music you want. be sure to use the wave editor to cut off the music or noise you dont want.

this process works and has been tested...it just takes patience to figure out

HOLY FREAKING CRAP!! THAT IS AWESOME, MAN! :D I had never realized that feature before. It's much easier than using a patch cord on the sound card ports, and one less way that you could be losing any miniscule amount of quality as well. With mine, I still have to be careful with the audio peaking, but that's easy enough to adjust. Thanks for pointing that out.

Another good audio editing program I would like to mention is Audacity. Very powerful, flexible, and free, although it has a slight learning curve.

Thanks again for pointing out that method Milkmandan. And good luck with your recording Theory Girl.

thanks gangstaj8, i knew that skill would come in VERY handy, PLUS, dont want to spread this too far, but if you ever hear a song thats being streamed to you, and they wont let you download it, and you've searched for a link, you can always use this method to create your own mp3 ;)

this works for NEW music as well....any NEW release for music, always come on mtv first, at least the popular ones, so what i usually do is watch the mtv online, find the best one with the best/crisp audio quality and just record it while i am playing it. i let everyone listen to mp3, and people ask HOW HOW HOW did you get it? har har har ;) yes i know very illegal,

this works for those songs that are streamlined at mp3.com as well..this works for game music and EVERYTHING...;)

*note: you lose a TINY bit of quality. its mainly in the volume, if you use dpPowerAmp, take the wave file and convert to mp3, and be sure to click volume normalize and it should fix it up a bit......a bit ;)

believe it or not, i found that method out in a VERY interesting way ;)

SO! i had just bought a headset for playing Counter-Strike source, and my microphone wasn't working.."i play CS with some music in the BG" and so i was trying to press K (the default for voice communication) but no one was responding to me, and they finally typed to me and told me to turn off my music.. i was wondering "HOw the hell can they hear that?"

so i checked my settings and found my recording channel to be on aux...so i tried a little experiment , i played a song from winamp, and use nero wave editor to record, and as soon as i saw the equalization bars jump...i pissed my pants ;)

har har..thanks the CS:S
