Just finished Berserk, and I am REALLY confused. *Spoilers!*

...I wish I could make topic titles longer, so I could have made this topic's title more descriptive...

I loved the first episode of Berserk, even though nothing was explained during it. After seeing that the series really started at the second episode, I expected that the first episode would be explained during the series. Things such as

Why Guts has one eye
Why Guts has that weird mark on his neck and why the demons are tormenting him
Why Guts has a big sword
Why Guts is known as The Black Swordsman
Why Guts has one arm
Where Guts got the repeating crossbow
Where Guts got the robotic arm
How Guts is so strong
What the deal with the Four Ugly Demons is
What a Ballet is (I’m sorry if I spelled that word wrong)

During the course of the series, we learn what a Ballet is, and in the last episode, we learn why Guts has one eye, the mark, and one arm.

But it is never explained why Guts survived, where he got the bow, why his sword is so big, where he got the robotic arm, why he's so strong, or what the deal with the Demons is.

And it is for that reason that I think that Berserk is really stupid. It barely explained anything that was in the first episode! I also disliked all of the episodes where the main characters were children very much.

However, after Guts and the rest of the cast grow up, I believe that the anime is so good, that it is the best anime I have ever seen, even better than the anime that I worshipped for two years, Evangelion.

To clarify what I am trying to say, I wanted to say that Berserk as an anime really sucks, but Berserk as a story is the best thing I have ever seen, better than any game, any book, any movie, anything. It's just that the anime blew chunks, because of the pilot episode being unexplained, the childhood episodes, and the ending (Not explaining anything. Otherwise, the ending was good.) I think it is a better story than any other I have ever heard, even Evangelion. Not, however, a better anime than Eva.

I understand that there is a Berserk manga out, which is so long that it is still continuing today and is at least 15 volumes (it is probably much longer than that). I looked at the first volume, and I was repulsed by the drawing style and the dark setting. I tried to read it to see if it explained what was unexplained in the series, but I couldn't find any answers there, either. Just like in the anime, the manga threw us into a world with this guy named Guts who has all of these details, but none of them are explained. I couldn't bring myself to read any more of it.

I would like it if someone with knowledge of the Japanese manga could explain to me what happened between the time of Episode 25 and Episode 1 of Berserk.

...Also, what the hell is this "Black Eclipse" Crap...?!...Who is ‘Puck’, why was that fairy smiling, and how was Guts born?

well ive probaly got as much answers as you have and little more. but, il try to think of something. lets asume that guts escaped all that wierd crap from eppisode 24-25 . dont know why or how, mabey his fighting skills we're just too damn good for thoughs undead freaks. now, he became some sort of hero thing and went alot killing wierded monsters and shit. errr, to be honest i cant realy think of anything actualy. but i do agree with ya that the story was prety damn awsome. it would be cool though if a second season was made that explained everything before eppisode 1 and after eppisode 25

Berserk is really stupid? Grow up! You're not going to be spoon-fed answers your whole life. The important thing is that Guts survived. I don't see how you can claim that Berserk as an anime sucks, while Berserk as a story surpasses Evangelion, when I'm assuming you've never seen/read any Berserk manga or novels or any other possible means of telling the story. I ask you to look over the series again and understand that they did the best they could with what they could to make a damn good show so that they could convey to us one hell of a story.

While the story that the Berserk anime series covers is a small portion of the true story told through the ongoing manga, it is a self-contained story that doesn't need anything else. It starts by showing you Guts's life and self, then goes through and shows you why and how Guts became the way he is, and goes full-circle, ending exactly where it began.

A huge freaking box of details are left out during the last episode, but the point gets across, they left out all of those details because of what they wanted to accomplish.

The director of Berserk's anime wants to make more past the Eclipse, unfortunately it doesn't seem likely to happen. I'd die for "Berserk 2" but I doubt there is enough draw for that. One thing that has been mentioned is that if Berserk 2 will ever exist, it won't become a possibility until after the manga (which is still being made) is finished. This makes sense because they'll be able to have all of it in their hands before creating the 2nd series, they'll know exactly what details they can leave out and what they can't - so that next time there won't be the desire to develop a full new character just to save Guts's ass in one episode or less. It may never happen, it may happen, I have my fingers crossed but until never the manga will serve as a more than satisfactory substitute.

Oh, darn, I should have mentioned - if you're main concern is Berserk as a story, then you should love the manga. It's so plentiful. Unfortunately only 3 volumes are currently officially available in the west, so you can either wait a heck of a long time, learn Japanese, or just get some scanlations or something of that sort.

You should read the manga. Its story line is more in depth and goes much further. The current manga volume is 28, its starting to get very interesting with character developement. There are no plans for a Berserk 2, The Berserk anime didn't make much of an impact in Japan. Which is odd since the manga is very popular. It pretty much all boiled down to the changes that happened in the anime. The anime is extrememly diluted compared to the manga. Personally I dont want to see a Berserk 2 since it would be too edited and would be an embarrassment to the manga.

BTW this has been talked about dozens of times, might want to check around for more info.

Dude, I am your friend! But Berserk rules... I can't let that be denied.

Anyway, I'd tell you the answers, but I don't have them. I do know that the character The Skull Knight that was left out of the anime entirely but was developed early in the manga (I beleive around the Zodd The Immortal part, or atleast I've heard them mentioned together) Skull Knight is the one who saved Guts and Caska. But beyond that I don't know, I want to wait till I get to that part of the manga to find out what happens, or atleast to find out what I don't already unfortunately know. (And it WILL be atleast 1,000 years until I get there, since Dark Horse releases like 1 volume of Berserk every many number of months, I may eventually just hijack my brother's translated Berserk computer manga someday)

But really, this topic has come up before and I'm fairly certain everything that went on during the Eclipse that we anime viewers didn't see has been explained in detail, if you want better answers try to find one of the other topics about it.

I'll answer them but most of them are answered in the series:

1. He has one eye since one of the demons in the eclipse event stabbed it out with its claw.

2. The mark on his neck is the mark of the sacrifice which is given to those who are meant for sacrifices for the chosen one's asscention (note this doesn't only apply to Griffith but also all the others that this happens too).

3. Gutts latest and greatest big sword is called the Dragon Slayer, He "recieves" it from Goto. He uses it in order to fight Apostles (the demons).

4. He is called Black swordsman since he wheres all black and has a very dark nature (followed by massives deaths).

5. He only has one arm because he chopped it off with his sword in order to free himself from the apostles mouth in order to save Casca.

6. When Gutts recieved his arm he also recieved the crossbow from Goto and Rickett.

7. He got the arm from Goto.

8. Gutts becomes incredibly strong after the eclipse because of the Mark of the Sacrifice. This mark puts Gutts' body in between the real world and the spiritual world. Due to this his will can actually affect his physical body. He has become almost monster-like now in the manga after becoming the Berserker.

9. The four demons you speak of are Angels. They are re-incarnated humans like Griffith. Not much is known about them other than they are playing a part in everything that has taken place or is taking place in the manga.

10. A Belit is later explained in the manga as a gateway to the demon world. Like the demon angels not much is known about it other than when its chosen human has a strong desire it opens the gateway to the 4 gods so that the wish can be granted.
