(Partial) AMVs on Magazine Coverdisk
(Definition for those that don't know: Coverdisk - CD that comes with a magazine, on the cover, like game demos that come with some computer/console magazines)
At an anime showing today, a bilingual member brought in some anime magazines from France, as usual. One of them had a coverdisk, and he gave it to me during break so I could check out some game on it. But I saw on the sleeve "Anim(sic) Music Videos" and "Discover the phenomenon" (in French) on it. I tried to find the files on the disk directly, but was thrown off by the number of DAT files. (it was in VCD format, I believe, and had a lot of other anime promo material on it)
The magazine is "Otaku", published by Groupe fjm. It was No.7, the July/August issue. It included 30-second portions of the following videos. (I didn't watch them all, but they didn't seem to necessarily start from the beginning of the video)
[square brackets are my additions]
JB - Akira - Symphony of Destruction [Feanor]
Kevin Caldwell - Miyu - Goldeneye
Laputa - Forever Young [Michael Ko]
Les ailes d'homeamise - Theme Star Trek [Ingress Productions]
Liberi Fatali (Giant Robot(sic) clip) [Kusoyaro]
Miyazaki's Heaven - My Blue Heaven by Smashing Pumpkins [Kusoyaro]
On Your Mark [Studio Ghibli]
Saint Seyia(sic) - Sombra - Challenging A God
I flipped through the mag and didn't see anything about AMVs. (I thought most coverdisk mags had a page describing what's on the disk) And perhaps I missed some text on the CD or something, but Kusoyaro/the other names weren't mentioned anywhere. (unless there was a title screen on videos I didn't see) When I told Hsien, he was like "wtf?", so I assume it's the same for the others.
Just bringing another point of distribution to peoples' attention.

What I find shocking is the fact that France has an anime magazine at all!

Given the selection of French manga around here (mostly from Glenat) and some magazines I've seen, I believe it's quite big there. It wouldn't surprise me that anime is too.
I looked for a copy of Otaku magazine for myself, but couldn't find one... I picked up the first issue of Japan Mania instead. I found it amusing to see on the cover "Qui sont les fansubbers?"
It actually has a four page article on fansubbers (and mentions fansub ethics, ie: no distribution after the show is licensed in France), and gives links to 5 French fansub groups. There's also a two page article on downloading anime. I wonder if they'll talk about AMVs next.
