Non-Anonymous Star-Ratings
I think Star-ratings should not be anonymous like they are right now. I have seen way too many instances where videos (yes even my own) have received a number of 1's. Generally, it's when a video is fairly high and then I see it tumble and tumble down. Given, MOST of the times, these videos aren't the greatest and may not deserve it, but on some occassions, the videos dont' deserve the scores they deserve. I think if people realized they had to put their name behind their scoring, they might not be prone to rate so harshly.
Please don't take this as me bitching about my particular videos. I'm sure a number of you would agree that it needs to be non-anonymous just like the review system. There needs to be some credibility behind it and so on.
Thanks for your time!

Post subjects are a waste of time
But the opposite problem would be the case if names were put to ratings: people would be timid to rate low even if the video deserved it. We already have this standpoint with the normal rating system, so why have it on star ratings as well?
The star ratings aren't anonymous to Phade, surely? If there's a distinct trend in abuse of the system as you describe, he can deal with any guilty party (and if you're concerned for specific AMVs, you could always forward them to his attention). He's busy and all, but he has the power.

Amen, stars aren't as important as opinions so I don't really care. It's when my opinion scores get 1s do I have to shape up and figure out where I'm fuckin' up... and Xanthrax, your sig kills me ^_^Xanthrax wrote:But the opposite problem would be the case if names were put to ratings: people would be timid to rate low even if the video deserved it. Re: Post subjects are a waste of time
No don't get me wrong, I for the most part agree that they don't matter (hell ops don't to a degree too). However, I think having it anonymous sort of destroys some of the credibility of it. If people can't give out bad scores without any repurcussions and do it under the shield of "anonymous," then they will do it. If it weren't anonymous, people would have to truly think before reviewing since it has their name on it. People don't generally do "bad" things if they know their name is on it. They do their best to well...keep up their good image and so on.OmniStrata wrote:Amen, stars aren't as important as opinions so I don't really care. But for the most part, I do agree that they don't matter that much, but at the same time, it's just a suggestion.

Hey,
One of the things that I want to do with the star system is use it to come up with a "suggestion" query. It would compare all of the scores you gave, compare them to all of the score everyone else gave, find a trend line, and then "suggest" videos that you haven't downloaded yet that you would most likely find enjoyable. If the scores given by you in the star scale are inaccurate then the results will be inaccurate. The member would then have the opportunity to go back and correct thier star ratings so that their "suggestion query" results would be good.
That should hopefully be an incentive for people to be honest in their star ratings.
