Are these...lega?
Are anime music videos legal under copyright laws? Please don't post with the crappy response of: No one will find out, or: Yes, but who cares. I'm looking for a serious awnser.

Re: Are these...lega?
Technically the answer is "yes, they are illegal." Think about it, we're using *someone else's* footage (hell even the US distributors have to *buy* rights to shows) and *someone else's* music. We're not paying them for these rights and ultimately with this site, we are distributing it for free (to a degree).knippers wrote:Are anime music videos legal under copyright laws? Sure most people don't give two shits about our community and I wouldn't worry about it, but the possibility does exist. The RIAA could easily make the argument that we're distributing their music and that people are getting the music for free.
Hopefully that answer is sufficient (albeit a bit sucky for us).

Taking the music out of the equation, why would it be illegal to edit the anime (if it even is). I ask this because I have seen times when something like the evening news might play clips from some tv show or movie or what have you. Are they required to pay licensing fees on something like that? If no, how are we any different?

I don't know. That's a good question. You could even use examples like violent video games on the evening news...I'm pretty damn sure the game company didn't give them permission like: "Yeah sure you can use our footage to make us look bad."Zarxrax wrote:Are they required to pay licensing fees on something like that? At the same time, they are giant media corporations and we're just normal joe-shmoe consumer and it'd probably be a lot easier to nail us. And we all know this "downloaded audio/video" is the newest craze...no matter how legal or illegal it is.
And like you said, the music is the big one and thus makes it illegal. Good question though, I wonder if anyone has a definite answer. I'm just speculating (with that video game footage comment).

Yeah except:DJ_Izumi wrote:I could likely get reward money for turning in the Org... I've been debating with myself over doing so. Mmm, Money.
A) You've made AMVs and are listed on here.
B) There's no reward.
C) I'm sure one of the 7,000 or so creators would get out of jail (or pay) and ultimately kill you or at least bring harm to you

As far as I know, yes, most TV stations (or their associated networks, like NBC, ABC, etc.) have to get express permission to show the footage. That's why when they show clips from movies and such, it's usually accompanied by a "Footage provided by: Movie Studio Name". They probably don't have to pay to use it, unless they're using it some for of advertising or something.
And I doubt if hardly anybody on this site has the written permission of both the anime production company or the record label (or band, if independant). So yes, for all intensive purposes, they are not legal.
