A second opinion:
If you've paid for the source material you can do whatever you want as long as it's for you, family, a few close friends, etc. This is covered under the fair use laws (in legal terms, it's called time-shifting and space-shifting).
You start asking for trouble if you show your work to any public group, including distribution by Internet. Even here, the law is not completely against you despite what the RIAA and MPAA might say. As the EFF says, fair use exceptions are decided on a case by case basis. Works of parody, for example, have been through the courts and generally given a pass on First Amendment grounds. I don't know of any cases about AMVs or other types of music videos.
As always, going to court these days is a crap shoot having nothing to do with reason, justice, fairness, or other such "primitive" concepts. Having even the law on your side won't necessarily stop the powers that be (government included) from hassling you. On the other hand, if you're a minnow in the Big Water, the sharks may never notice you.
I'm not a lawyer so don't take my word for anything. You can go to the link above; they have a page about fair use issues. There's a lot to read if you want to get into it.

The short answer:
1. You can make amvs and show them to your friends and such at home.
2. Distrubution on the web is basically ILLEGAL
The long and short of it is, they are illegal and legal in different respects. We do chance it here with release of AMVs but they are basically considered parodies or fan works, which I highly doubt would lead to a lawsuit. From what I've seen AMVs usually promote bands and anime so neither the anime companies nor the music companies really bother with us. I myself have bought many cds and anime DVDs after watching good AMVs.

Re: What if?????????
I have tried that before, all they will tell you is "please refer to our policies with fair use laws. We can not give permission to use any of our footage nor will we endorse it in anyway."CaDragon19 wrote:What if I were to contact the companies that produced the origional material and asked for permission to make an AMV as promotion for their product???
