It can be done!

Post by Beowulf » Thu Jul 20, 2006 8:25 pm

It is possible to break into the professional film world with AMVs. I just did it!

I'm not making this thread to broadcast how awesome I am, but I know there are a lot of you guys out there who are trying one way or another to be professional editors, or directors, or writers, producers, what have you. Don't get discouraged if you havn't hit it yet, it IS possible.

I showed one of my videos to the right person and he gave me a job as an editor for an independant low budget feature. Once I finished that, I got a gig editing a documentary for Los Hooligans Productions, a subsidiary of Trouble Maker Studios (Roberty Rodrigez's studio).

Funny enough as it is, it turns out people in the film world LOVE editors who come from AMVs. AMV editing teaches you to have a MUCH more keen eye for visuals and visual flow than film editing does. Its a different kind of focus. The primary reason I was hired was because the director just "liked the way I cut". What she really likes is all the lovely tricks I learned from editing AMVs. Film editors toss around abstract ideas in hushed reverance like "oooh man, maybe we can be REALLY CRAZY and just make it like a music video thing or something! And maybe just maybe we can TIME some of those SCENE CHANGES on that CYMBAL CRASH to make it change RIGHT ON THE BEAT!". ROFL, we've been doing that for years.

Anyway, there is hope, and its awesome. Use your AMV editing skills and styles as your PRIMARY selling point, because its a very good selling point. No hollywood editor knows what the fuck we are doing, we are completely unknown, and we do things a completely different way which (judging by the reactions I've goten to my professional work so far), is a style that can really change the film world, and hollywood as a whole, a couple years down the line.

In short:

I used to hear stories that amvs are heavily discouraged in portfolios.

... well, bad ones anyways.

This is the truth! My son, TH3G3CK0 now points out the poor timing, repeated scenes, and other "errors" when watching commercials, music videos, and the like.

Well, congrats to say the least. As this is only a hobby, i'll likely just take your observences as a quaint reminder that i may be able to do something else when the mind-crushing numbness of actual work in my chosen field finally gets the best of me.

I put AMVs in my portfolios for Syracuse's Film School and Emerson College (my current school). I was accepted into both.

Take your hobby and do something productive with what you love
