I found out awhile ago that there was going to be an Anime convention here in Minneapolis (Anime Detour) and decided I should submit something. Before I would work on my main video I decided to do a trial run with an expermental video so I could get some practice with After Effects and to master AbsoluteDestiny & ErMaC's guide. After I got pretty confortable I started on what I thought would be my main video. About a third of the way through I realized I would not have enough video to make the video properly. I then started on a new video which I basically completed but decided was too conventional and straight forward.
In the meantime I was randomly playing CD's when I came across the song "Territorial Pissings" by Nirvana. I always liked this song and thought this would be kinda cool for an intro to an action based television series. I immediately looked through my Anime collection for action series, a category I am seriously lacking in. FLCL popped up but it is not a completely action based series. After thinking about it I decided I would make it look like an action based series, sort of a cross between the A-Team and Mission Impossible and things like that.
I am not sure how much time went into this, my guess is around thirty hours or so. Unfortunately, the Anime Detour AMV contest was a bit of a bust. Due to lack of time they only showed about five videos with only one random video max per person. In the end, this video was never even shown and I was pretty disappointed. Hopefully a decent amount of people will see it here so I can justify the time spent on it!
-Technical Details-
To start off I used Premiere and edited the entire video and exported it. Then I needed to create the names of the characters, along with their job specialties, and the a few other things. I used Photoshop and experimented around until I got something that looked good. For the title I used Army type font and added camo to it. That combined with a gun cocking effect from FLCL helped set the tone , I believe, at the beginning. Next I used Photoshop to remove all the color in the frames where the character is held except for the character that is in mid-action. I then found secondary pictures to go with this freeze frame type look to round it off.
After I started integrating this stuff and experimenting with it, a problem developed. The freeze frame portions had too little action going on the screen and needed some type of motion. Eventually, I added the sound graph to their names and it seemed much better. Then I did some polishing by removing unnecessarily moving mouths and a few other effects.
In the end I think it turned out pretty well. Some things took a little while to figure out such as which character is going to have what specialty since some of the minor characters have basically no action scenes at all. It was pretty fun to make though and I believe this video is going to be my bridge from previous conventional videos to what I hope is going to be my magnum opus coming up next.
