Now And Then, Here And There - Runaway
The following represents my latest effort in editing, being finally finished after about a month of more of a stressfull than fun time working on it. But that was mainly because Adobe Premiere cheated on me a lot.
So much for the whining...

I bought the DVD-Box Set of this great animated Series out of the blue, well not entirely, I read a lot of positive reviews before, but still I couldn't imagine what would expect me back then.
Watching this series was like drug to me. I just had to do it in one rush, because in about every episode the actions reached a new, bigger climax. Though the animations are clearly NOT state of the art, and you can figure by the "simple" looks of the characters and animations that the studio suffered money-issues, "NAT,HAT" is far, far away from looking bad. In fact, the simplicity adds additional seriousness to the dramatic topics the series deals with, which would be all those "good things" going on in the real world today, mainly the abuse of children as soldiers or general brutality amongst people, including rape and torture.
The package that is offered here is a hard one to swallow, though with maybe a few exceptions, it never get's very graphic at all, violence doesn't always have the biggest impact on an audience, when shown blatantly obvious. (though that happens quite some times, don't get me wrong) In "Now And Then, Here And There" the strongest scenes happen behind "closed doors", you know what's going on and you're let alone with that knowledge, alongside your own imagination.
(not to forget the great set of characters the series can offer!!!)
I won't go into any story details here, although I marked this video with a spoiler-warning.
See, that is mainly because I'm not a hundred percent sure what people consider a spoiler and what they don't.

It's annoying finding yourself dropping project after project just because you don't get anything out of it anymore after while. The fun part fades away and it's ought to be work only...at least that happens to me quite often. Call me repetitive using Pearl Jam material again, but that's not a fanboy-thing going on with me, definitely, it's just that I felt I should really try to edit a video to this very song. (it's all the time  )
Can't Keep is the first song on Pearl Jam's 2002 effort "Riot Act", being somewhat of an intro to what I think was a brilliant record over all. I play guitar myself and get a lot of inspiration out of Pearl Jam's work, early and actual. What I love about the lead guitar play on "Riot Act" or this very song in particular, is the excessive use of delay, creating a somewhat sentimental ambience that fits so well with the theme of the anime. (Again that's a matter of opinion, but I do hope you fellow watchers will agree with me on that.)

The theme this 3:50 minute piece focuses around is escape. A brief recap of the quest of the main characters to run away from the circle of violence and killing their trapped in, no matter how different their reasons may be. That briefly wraps it up. It's a music video in the end, short and all. ;)
After first dropping the project some month ago, only the title survived the cut and remastering.
Originally I tried to get this thing done with an instrumental song called "Runaway" off of the fourth volume of the original "Bubblegum Crisis" OVA soundtracks. A neat song, very sad and all, which reminded me a lot of "Joe Hisaishi's" work. Some of you may now him, since he is an incredibly successfull composer in Japan, who scored most "Takeshi Kitano" movies and a whole lot of other great films. (including just so many GHIBLI flicks...)
Nothing special to say about the editing process in general. I used Adobe Premiere Pro, alongside Photoshop CS for some ads and stuff. During the process, I had my fights with Premiere dying on me during the export several times and (though that may sound like a lame excuse...) influenced the outcome of the video a little bit, meaning I couldn't end the thing like I originally wanted to and had to redo some scenes I was already satisfied with.
However, I'm still pretty pleased with the result.
:-)
...hope you'll like what you'll see.
