  • Comments: The first week I owned Snow Patrol's Final Straw album, I must have listened to the song Run for about 20 hours total (I had it on loop for several hours a day). I was also watching Last Exile at the time, and I instantly thought it would be a good match for the song. The song's lyrics are sort of a mess, but they reminded me of lovers on the lam from a much larger conflict that they've been caught up in. Claus and Lavie from Last Exile aren't exactly lovers, but they have a relationship that reminds me a lot of the relationships in Ghibli films such as Kiki, Laputa, Spirited Away, etc., where they may be too young for romantic love, but there is still a deep, affectionate bond between the two. Even though I have the "romance" and "character profile" tabs checked, I'd say this video is actually a relationship profile, with some coming-of-age and epic adventure thrown in for good measure.

The big solo near the end of the song was also a big draw for me. As soon as I thought of Last Exile while listening to the song, I saw Vanships soaring through the air during the solo.

The original song is nearly 6 minutes long and fairly repetitive on a musical level, so I decided to do a bit of cutting. My first couple of tries, I basically gutted the song and took away any sort of cohesion, but eventually, I ended up with something that stands on its own as a complete song.

Here are the lyrics (with the cut portions in italics):

I'll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
    In all I've done

And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere
    Away from here

    Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

    Louder louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbye
    I nearly do

    Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

    Louder louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

    Slower slower
We don't have time for that
All I want is to find an easier way
To get out of our little heads

    Have heart my dear
    We're bound to be afraid
Even if it's just for a few days
Making up for all this mess

    [SOLO]

    Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear
