  • Comments: Summary: Sakaki, the one serious character in a loopy show.

This started out with a momentary flash of "Hey, that kind of fits, sort of, maybe," then turned into deadpan satire - so serious it's silly. But after I started editing, I began to like it as a straightforward character profile. Out of context - and without the original score - the goofy edge to Sakaki's moodiness starts to get lost. From then on it was approached as a regular character profile/drama, with the thought in the back of my mind that it would look pretty silly in the right light.

So you can see it either way, really.

I started editing with only a vague concept, and came out with what is probably a vague video. But it came together fairly painlessly and was fun to work on, so I can live with that. It's not very ambitious, just a simple project.

Kind of a weird title, but I didn't know what to call it for a long time, and for some reason this started to sound good to me. Well, good-ish. I wanted to touch on the meanings of "similar to" and "feel affection for" at the same time - two themes on the serious side of Sakaki's character.

And though the possibly obvious interpretation is that it's a comment on the editor, it isn't meant that way. I don't actually relate to Sakaki that much; I think I'm most like Osaka or Yomi. Though I also love animals, I'm more of a dog person. ;)

You really should know this song. If you don't yet, welcome to this song. The Smiths were a prime angst/alternative band in the '80s - if you've heard of the Cure, try the Smiths next. "How Soon Is Now?" is their best-known song, a chilly, six-minute ode to teen angst and alienation. This video cuts it down to around four minutes to save my sanity and yours, but I recommend any of the originals. (This version comes from Hatful of Hollow, a sort-of-live album, as I understand; the original version is on Meat Is Murder and a couple of their singles compilations.)

Lyrics of the parts that are actually in this cut:

I am the son and the heir
of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
    of nothing in particular

    You shut your mouth
    How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
    Just like everybody else does

When you say it's gonna happen "now"
    When exactly do you mean?
See, I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone

    Will you shut your mouth
    How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
    Just like everybody else does

The end credit background is made from one of the wallpapers on the official English-release site. They're quite nice.

Thanks to everyone who helped with beta-viewing, title ideas, and, however indirectly, convinced me to give this thing a try when it was back in the "This is too ridiculous; I can't possibly do this" stage.

(Note - for the eighty-seventh time, you HAVE to check "digital effects" if you use more technology than a toaster to make your video. Plz do not get on my case because I checked "digital effects" kthx. Them's the rules, folks.)

The local download is DivX 5.2.1; I'll have an MPG version up on my webspace eventually, for direct download. Having problems with changing the framerate and having the timing get all screwed up - I get that a lot.

    Anyway, thanks and enjoy.
