I stumbled across the idea for this video as I was searching through the internet for Peter Gabriel songs that I didn't have. I found out that he sang a cover of the theme from "Babe" for the sequel, "Babe: Pig in the City". Since the song had originally been sung by Randy Newman, having Peter Gabriel sing it was already an improvement. The song was also re-orchestrated for the Black Dyke Mills Band. Once I heard the song a few times, it became clear. The lyrics, which are about finding the strength within yourself to succeed in your goals, were almost tailor-made for "Spirited Away".
After that, the video pretty much edited itself for me. The only challenge was finding what to do with the 1:15 instrumental introduction, which comes in two phases. First, a progression of chords that almost sounds like crying, which I put together with a series of shots of Chihiro crying or in distress at the apparent hopelessness of being trapped in the spirit world, followed by a rousing introduction of the main theme, which I paired with Haku coming to Chihiro's rescue, which leads into him lip-synching the first line to cement the idea that he is the one teaching Chihiro how to believe in herself.
Editing was done off-and-on for a couple of weeks, and completed during a day of traveling home from a convention. I used Final Cut Pro 4.5 on my 12-inch PowerBook, then did final mastering on my Power Mac G5.
