Update: Come What May gets Second Place in the Upbeat category at AUSA 2004.
Third Lens Open presents its latest creation and first AWA Pro entry, Come What May.
I first saw Nausicaa this past June, on a 2nd or 3rd-generation fansub tape that was part of Ashyukun's incredibly large tape donation to my schools' anime club. I feel that the experience was heightened by the alleged 'sub-par' quality of VHS; in the days of easily-obtained digital fansubs, recently-made otaku like myself have lost touch of what it was like back when anime was a precious commodity and hard to come by. In any case, I was instantly taken by the movie as a whole, and particularly by Nausicaa as a protagonist.
I've had a collection of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes MP3s on my computer for a while. One particular day at work, while driving to my DDR--- err, lunch break, Tomorrow started playing off a mix CD I had burned just that morning. I instantly saw the connection, and my first move was not to hit the arrows, but to pick up the '...Are A Drag' CD so I had high-quality source. I also asked AbsoluteDestiny about finding a decent video source, and he pointed me to the legit Hong Kong release, for which I am eternally grateful.
Because at the time I was waiting for my new laptop to arrive, I didn't start the video. Because of delays I wouldn't get my laptop till mid-July, when I was working as a counselor at the Summer Institute for the Gifted. Once I had all my Adobe software loaded onto Umi-chan, I realized that the Nausicaa AMV would be perfect for giving her capabilities a quick test.
Technical Notes
Total editing time: roughly 5-10 hours. As Tomorrow is a short song (clocking in at about 1:30), it wasn't that involving a project. I also didn't use any effects, just rubber-band opacity and changes to clip speed. This was a very 'back-to-basics' video for me.
Video Notes
Nausicaa is unique as a character because her "flaw" is that she's so willing to sacrifice herself for others, and even in the worst of circumstances refuses to give up hope. I feel that 'Tomorrow' matches her well.
Lyrics
The sun'll come out... tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow... there'll be sun...
Just thinking about... tomorrow
Clears away the cobwebs and the sorrow... 'til there's none...
When i'm stuck with a day... that's gray... and lonely...
I stick out my chin... and grin... and say...
The sun'll come out tomorrow
So you gotta hang on 'til tomorrow, come what may
Tomorrow, tomorrow, i love you, tomorrow
You're always a day away
Tomorrow, tomorrow, i love you, tomorrow...
You're always a day... away
Yeah!
Acknowledgements
As mentioned above, thanks to Ashyukun for introducing me to Nausicaa and AD for pointing me to the R3 DVD version. I would also like to credit AtomX for his excellent FF8 vid, Why...? Can't...? I...? Stylistically his video is an excellent example of how to edit to a Me First song, and was somewhat inspirational.
Thank you to my beta-viewers, who include both my close friends and fellow counselors at SIG as well as a privileged few of my campers who were lucky enough to knock on my door while I was editing.
And finally, thank you to anyone who downloads and enjoys my work.
Enjoy.
