First off, credit DJ Izumi for providing the audio source. (The trailer was only available in quicktime format, which I can't rip)
This was a fun video to make, requiring only 4 days of organizing clips and 5 days of editing. It took in total about 20 hours editing, which is much lower than my past videos, but on the other hand, the duration of this video is much shorter. Still, it feels like I didn't need to put as much effort into this one, since I didn't have to struggle with Windows Movie Maker nearly as much as I have on some of my past ones. Oh well, I started the video before the new year and had a rough draft by New Year's Day. Then I took a nice 10 day vacation in Mexico :). I came back, saw more clearly what I didn't like (mostly botched lip syncs), and fixed it up.
A few snags I hit were finding substitute scenes for the swords clanking sound effects. There are no swords in Spirited Away, so I had to look for some other things that would produce the same sound. I also couldn't find a male counterpart for Captain Hook in Spirited Away, so I just used Yubaba. I hope it's not too disturbing.
As for why Yubaba plays both Hook and Wendy's mother:
Jason Isaacs, who plays Captain Hook, one of the most famous villains of literature, did deep research into the play's connection with Barrie's life.
"The key for me is that Barrie insisted that Mr Darling, the father of the children Peter Pan takes to Neverland, must be played by the same actor who plays the wicked Captain Hook," says Isaacs, who also plays Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films.
"When you go back to the original, you find that the story starts when Mr Darling tells his daughter, Wendy, that her childhood is over. He is placing her in the care of her Aunt Millicent (Lynn Redgrave), who will prepare her for her adult life and the task of finding a husband. Mr Darling is the typical strict Edwardian parent who sees childhood as a sort of pretty waiting room in which we prepare for the real business of life, namely, adult responsibility, marriage and a family.
"Wendy goes up to bed and, that very night, Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up, flies into her room and takes her and her brothers to Neverland, where the kids are in charge and smarter than the adults. Captain Hook is obviously a twisted fantasy of the domineering parent, the shadow side of the father figure, and that presents a challenge for any actor."
DJ Izumi's Trailer Challenge was how I found the idea of making an AMV to the Peter Pan trailer.
The reason I chose Spirited Away for the video source is because the trailer contains a section with Coldplay's "Clocks" playing. I had been meaning to make a Spirited Away - "Clocks" video, but was rather hesitant because I didn't think I'd be able to pull it off ("Clocks" has several long repeating instrumental sections to which I wasn't sure what to put in). But since this trailer only had a short section of the song, as well as plenty of sound effects I could work with, I figured I'd go with Spirited Away.
I followed the style used in Back To The Future 2 : Cowboy Bebop The Movie Trailer. All the non-narrator spoken parts are lip synched and scene selection was based off the sound effects.
I also learned a lot just from watching trailers before movies during the xmas break. I noticed in the trailer to that new movie with Viggo Mortenson that they used a lot of fade to blacks and back from blacks between scenes. So I tried that in this video.
Of course, the original Peter Pan trailer itself was a major influence on scene selection.
As always, I greatly appreciate feedback.
