  • Comments: “Testing Is the Future” is a participation based AMV in which a series of questions are asked to the viewers. I first showed the video to the public at Anime Expo 2013 in the AMV Competition. In fact, that was the first time I had ever entered into an AMV contest. Seeing as how I had never shown the video to anyone besides my family before the competition, I was completely shocked by the audience’s reaction when it was shown. Their enthusiasm was what made the video so great.

The video originally began as a series of short comedy clips similar to a Robot Chicken episode, but later evolved into a series of tests based on Portal and an AMV called “Senpai Says” created by Douggie. I loved the Robot Chickenesque clips so much that I decided to leave my favorite ones in the final video as part of a half-time show.

Each test in the video was created from scratch using Adobe After Effects and Photoshop. The lip syncing and monologues were done with Adobe Premiere. For the monologues, I used individual words and syllables from Portal's voice audio to piece together coherent sentences. Before making this video, I had never used either Adobe After Effects or Premiere so there was a bit of a learning curve for me to overcome. From concept to final render, the video was made within a 3 month span (I lost track of the hours).

Fun fact: There are 400 soot sprites in the final test of this video. I still have nightmares about animating all of those little critters.
