    Intro

Wikipedia defines limerence as "a cognitive and emotional state of being emotionally attached or even obsessed with another person, typically experienced involuntarily and characterized by a strong desire for reciprocation of one's feelings - a near-obsessive form of romantic love." Such a condition is characterized by fantasies: "All events, associations, stimuli, and experiences return thoughts to the limerent object with unnerving consistency, while conversely the constant thoughts about the limerent object define all other experiences. If a certain thought has no previous connection with the limerent object, immediately one is made. Limerent fantasy is unsatisfactory unless rooted in reality, because the fantasizer may want the fantasy to seem realistic and somewhat possible. At their most severe, intrusive limerent thoughts can occupy an individual's waking hours completely, resulting - like severe addiction - in significant or complete disruption of the limerent's normal interests and activities." Fantasies can manifest during sleep as well: "Fantasies are occasionally dreamed by the one experiencing limerence. Dreams give out strong emotion and happiness when experienced, but often end with despair when the subject awakens." The condition is sustained by hope of reciprocation: "The base for limerent hope is not in objective reality but reality as it is perceived. The inclination is to sift through nuances of speech and subtleties of behavior for evidence of limerent hope [...] "Little things" are noticed and endlessly analyzed for meaning [...] Each word and gesture is permanently available for review, especially those interpreted as evidence in favor of "return of feeling." When objects, people, places or situations are encountered with the limerent object, they are vividly remembered, especially if the limerent object 'interacted' with them in some way. The belief that the limerent object does not and will not reciprocate can only come about with great difficulty. Limerence can be carried quite far before acknowledgment of rejection is genuine, especially if it has not been addressed openly by the object of limerence."

    The Story

This is the concept I based this amv on. It doesn't follow the story of the anime (which in itself appears as some kind of a limerent fantasy). Instead of the usual story of "girl meets boy, girl takes forever to confess but finally does, girl then gets the boy" I made my own version: "Girl meets boy, girl develops a heavy crush on him, girl confesses but gets rejected, girl nonetheless keeps on fantasizing and can't let go". The amv is about 50% fantasy and 50% reality. The scenes are differentiated by presenting the fantasy/fantasmatic gazes with boosted saturation and brightness while the reality scenes are only half-saturated and darker. The changes are pretty subtle but I hope depicherable. Stylistically I relied much on repetition. The idea was to present an endless series of bittersweet emotions generated by Sawako fantasizing followed by a reality check.

A note about the long outro: This idea developed in the planning stage. To be honest I didn't have any sublime artistic motives here, I just really wanted to work with the song and this was the perfect moment for it. The outro barely has any fantasy scenes at all. The idea was to focus on the reality of Sawako's one-sided love. For example, there is a continuation to the rejection scene (presented in the second chorus of the main song). Whereas in the actual amv Sawako immediately escapes back into her fantasy, in the outro she's forced to face the rejection.

    Editing

The amv relies heavily on fades. And if I decide to rely heavily on fades, I really do rely heavily on fades. I'm militant about consistency. I also wanted to try slide/zoom transitions, mainly because I'm not bored yet with them being fashionable at the moment and I hadn't tried to edit them before. Unfortunately I'm a little bit of an idiot and only learned afterwards about all the features of the pan/crop tool in Vegas. As a result the zooms and slides look static and linear. Bare with me ^_^'

And that's all what I wanted to say about this amv. Enjoy the gloom.

    Thanks to all beta testers!

"Did We Collide?" by Cloetta Paris

I noticed your name when you answered the phone.
I'm always obsessed by the details, but
it feels like I know it all, but not
where you went and who you called.

I knew from the start you'd be breaking my heart.
I'd still like to know you, cause I know it
seems like a lot of fun. Do you
care if I work or run?

    Did we collide?
Or were you only dancing by my side?
    Did I see you smile?
Or was it just a thing inside my mind?

You seem like someone who could stay for a while.
I'm only afraid I would lose, but I
try to be positive with the
way I am and life I live.

    Did we collide?
Or were you only dancing by my side?
    Did I see you smile?
Or was it just a thing inside my mind?

It's getting later. Maybe too late to even talk to him.
Do we have anything in common?
Do we have things enough to talk about?
What kind of movies does he like?
And is it even worth the humiliation to walk right up to him?
    Oh, he's leaving now.
    With that other girl.
    I guess it's too late.

    Did we collide?
Or were you only dancing by my side?
    Did I see you smile?
Or was it just a thing inside my mind?

I know he's only dancing by my side.
It's always just a thing inside my mind.

"Dancing on My Own" by Robyn
(the section heard in the amv bolded)

Somebody said you got a new friend
Does she love you better than I can?
It's a big black sky over my town
I know where you at, I bet she's around
Yeah, I know it's stupid, I just gotta see it for myself

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh
I'm right over here, why can't you see me? Oh
I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home, ooh
I keep dancing on my own
(I keep dancing on my own)

I'm just gonna dance all night
I'm all messed up, I'm so outta line
    Stilettos on broken bottles
    I'm spinning around in circles

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh
I'm right over here, why can't you see me? Oh
I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home, ooh
I keep dancing on my own
(I keep dancing on my own)

So far away but still so near
(The lights go on, the music dies)
But you don't see me standing here
(I just came to say goodbye)

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh
I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home, ooh
I keep dancing on my own
(I keep dancing on my own)

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh
I'm right over here, why can't you see me? Oh
I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home, ooh
I keep dancing on my own
(I keep dancing on my own)

I keep dancing on my own
