  • Comments: Puella Magi Madoka Magica has been one of the highlights of the Winter 2010/11 anime season. Deviously hiding a bleak and tragic core within the guise of a gentle and genial magical-girl show, it combines accumulating distress, dismay and ratcheting tension with distinctive aesthetics and ingenious art direction, whether it be the modern architectural garden of the city or the discordant and genuinely unsettling freakish nightmare-scapes of the witches' labyrinths - it's a show worth the attention that it's been receiving, with qualities to endear it to audiences beyond the typical mahou-shoujo viewership.

The genesis of this video was fairly straightforward; the strange creature Kyubey offers to fulfil "contracts" with the characters, bestowing great powers upon them - but there is an insidious penalty accrued by their use, a harrowing fee exacted for the contract, and a sinister agenda behind that innocuous, cheeky catty smile - and the glassy, unblinking eyes. There's another certain anime featuring contracts, unnatural powers and heavy prices... I'd say what it was, but what do you know, I've lost it. ;)

This video is designed as an alternate opening sequence for Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It is based off of the first opening sequence for the Darker Than Black anime (plus a quick preamble for viewers who may not be familiar with the exploits of Hei the "Chinese Electric Batman"), and its audio, action and direction are all specifically intended to reflect that parallel anime. I hope that the familiarity is a touchstone of fond recollection for people of both series, and that those who are not familiar with one or either of them are intrigued by its strong and clear spirit to seek out these compatriot shows.

Please enjoy, and comments and crticism are always appreciated and seriously considered.
