- My Pet Demon Self Destruct
Shin Hatsubai video #63 brings yet another unusual combination, in the melding of a pop-style shoujo with determinedly underground thrash metal. Because of the mixture of drama and comedy in the original anime, the blend between the two in the video is a little uneven, and may rub some people the wrong way. However, it's a pretty fair portrait of the ups and downs of adolescense itself, much like the song (written when the singer/songwriter/lead guitarist for MPD was just sixteen years old). Take it for what it is, which is a decent video, not anything special.
This video was sub-killed the easy way because I was working from only four eps, and knew that the source was kinda talky. Thus the bottom sixth of the picture was just cut off, and the remaining frame recentered in TMPEG en route to the editing environment. Besides this, there's a level-adjust, some acceleration/deceleration, and at least one AviSynth reverse (I can only remember doing one, but there might have been something else I needed to fix as well). A bunch of the "I'm ready" lines on the choruses are lip synched, some better than others.
This video also includes overuse of my trademark "progression fade" effect simulation. It's just deep crossfades allowing an object to fade in, then out, over a static background, and it appears three times in this video. The last time is particularly gratuitous.
Shin Hats Self Grade: B-/C+. As mentioned above, this video is to some degree held together with duct tape and baling wire, but it's decent if you know the anime, cool if you know the band (literally, not just have heard their stuff before), and in any case much better than #34. I took really shitty notes making this one; in the process of editing the HQ version, I discovered that I had left out like seven clips on the track sheet. That's just not acceptable, no matter how fast you're going.
