ok i hate the guides i have no idea what the hell all that stuff is, anyway step 1 is to get the source, that sounds just about as simple as finding the source of the matrix, what the hell dose that mean

The guides are there because generally people here don't have time to go step by step through the entire process with every newby that needs help, so it seems doubtful that people are going to help you if you refuse to look at the guides. Source is the footage you are going to use in your AMV. DVD's are good for this. The guides also give a detailed explanation of how to get your source footage off the DVD. If you have questions about the guides, you can go to the help forums and see if your question is answered there, and if it isn't, you can post your question.

LMFAO @ STEAKS PIC anyway the source is the dvd footage obviously... it can be attained by using one of a few programs like dvdecryptor or smartripper among others... you put a dvd in your dvd optical drive.. and rip the footage . once you finish that, pm me on the forum and ill help you with the rest.

wow... if u can't figure out what the source is then yer in trouble man. I would just quit now, cuz yer obviously trying to get into something you know absolutely nothing about.

When u wanna make an AMV the 1st thing u have to figure out is what the hell are u gonna use to make it? That's the source, so stop thinking about the Matrix and stop trying to understand all the big words that the Architect used, cuz he's wrong since that story is fictional. Now is it DBZ or Naruto, or are u gonna try to be original, and come up with something we haven't seen b4?

After u figure out what yer using, try to get the files into AVI or MPEG if yer using a PC. DVD's aren't as simple as just a click and drag, so u need to look at how to convert them. If its OGM or MKV and already on yer puter, u still need to get it to AVI or MPEG cuz the multiple audio tracks, and optional subtitles aren't recognizable by any editing software that I know of. If its a Mac... idk. I'm guessing they use MOV.

After u get the files to yer harddrive in the right format, now its as easy as clicking and dragging. Just put it into your editing software by clicking on import, or however u feel it needs to be done to get in the software (and may I suggest you use something simple like Movie Maker just to get your feet wet since its simple to use, and u don't have to get too confused about actually having to make affects), and then cut, reorder, and transition away all you want.

Then when your done you encode it back to your computer into w/e format u want for w/e purpose you want whether its for the internet, or for DVD or for just sitting on your computer while u show it to your friends.

Then after all that you can call yourself an editor, and then you can start to realize that your only as good as the footage your ripping, and that nothing you make really matters since u really didn't make it, and if you want you can be content with that or you can go on to try to make what we really haven't seen yet instead of what we've already seen w/ a few new affects and transitions on it, but thats for later after you get a handle on this, and can make other people feel stupid for asking "What's the source?"

People seem to be skipping to the "tear to shreds" step prematurely.

What people mean is that you'll want to figure out what anime and song you want to use. Almost all the guides talk about how to rip the anime from dvd, and the music from a cd for the highest quality of both possible. It's important to work with high quality source so your video looks good.

The huge guides are pretty confusing, so you'll probably want to avoid those at first. They can be more like reference manuals then guides sometimes.

How to rip your anime "video source" from DVD: zarxrax's Video Tutorials
How to rip your music "audio source" properly from CD: avtech beta guide cd audio page
How to use an mp3 for your "audio source" properly (not recommended for highest quality): avtech beta guide mp3 audio page

Now that you have your video and audio sources ready, you'll need to pick an editor. If you're lucky enough to have Adobe Premier or Vegas, you'll just have to figure out how to use them or find guides elsewhere. There's a few cheap (20$) programs you can buy to edit video, and windows comes with Windows Movie Maker free. The cheaper you go, the more limitations you'll find. But for your first video it shouldn't matter too much which one you use.

A few things that will get you yelled at:
- DivX or Mpeg4 logo, you can turn these off in your system settings, make sure you get rid of these if you spot them in your final video.
- Subtitles, if you're not using DVD video source, and have subtitles in your source for whatever reason, crop them out. Almost any editor can do this, I know it means you'll be missing the bottom bit of the screen, and you'll probably want to crop the same amount off the top so it looks the same. Subtitles are really distracting so get rid of em.

Beyond that, good luck!

As a full blown nubbin myself, I have to disagree. As superboi stated, if you can't figure something this basic out, how the hell are you going to be able to learn to use editing programs, effects, compression, codecs, etc. etc. etc. There's probably a more polite way to put it, but the point remains the same.

It's probably best to warn this guy about what he's getting into now, since it only gets harder from here.

When I first started this, I didn't know what the 'edit videos' button did. I thought it meant you made the amv on the website.

Oh dear. Oh dear dear dear.

I'm not even certain you have neither the attention span not the pateince to handle this sort of thing. And I'm quite serious about that. Perhaps this isn't for you.

I would like to take this time to remind people...read the sticky.

It just happens to be the very first thread on the General AMV page.
