Greyscale/Color Question

Postby CodeZTM » Wed Mar 21, 2007 8:27 pm

All righty... For my newest AMV, I want to have a grayscale background, with one character colored, while moving. Will I have to (witch I'm sure I will have to) edit each frame with Photoshop, or is their an easier way?

It would depend on the background you’re getting the colored object from(different techniques could be applied depending on simplicity or complexity of it). Your best option is masking frame by frame...

If the character in front is going to repeat the same movement, if they're running across the screen, then you can use the same layer, I guess, if you’re going to work in PS.

You could also do the masking in After Effects instead, but that would still require changing the mask for every frame in which the character moves, so I don't know how much easier it'd be than the GIMP route.

By the way, I always recommend the Pen tool (paths) for any such masking job. They're about the most flexible and useful way to do it that I know of; for example, you can take a path on one frame and drag it onto the next frame, then change a few points to meet the character's new position instead of having to redraw the whole path from scratch...

If the character in question is colored differently from the rest of the scene you can use a color-pass effect to color them while the rest of the scene remains in gray-scale. Experiment with a few layers in AE if that's not the case and you can usually come up with something decent.

Thanks for that one, I came up with a totally different effect than the one I was going for with this.
