This is Hopeless...(Sony Vegas Question)

Postby RIPmyprsoul » Sun Mar 18, 2007 5:01 pm

And when I mean hopeless, this question might not be able to be answered...My question is...how do you make Sony Vegas faster? Should I buy more memory/RAM/hard drive space for my computer or is there actually a free way I can use to make it faster?

Here's a good tip to speed start up time:

Go options > prefrences > uncheck ''show logo splash...''

A good method is also to check out Windows and to shut down unnecessary things. The easiest thing to do is to stop or close your virus scan programm.

This could be very usefull (the shareware is enough for those needs):
http://www.tune-up.com/

Scan your system for adds, pests (spyware) and viruses and let them remove.

If you use the Lagarith looseless codec... Change to the more faster Huffy.
If you work with avs scripts of XviD stuff or something like that (of course DVD d2v files excluded) in Vegas... Load them into VDM and cut out and render out the clips you need.

This should help.

what he said... it helps to know more information before giving any real answers

Okay. My system specs are...:

Toshiba Laptop
RAM: 504 MB
Memory (Space on Hard Drive): (about) 120 GB
About 60-70% Space left

Intel(R) Pentium(R) M Processor 1.73 GHz

Anything else you need to know?

I edit with MPGs straight from the DVD/PS2 Discs also and sometimes use and assortment of Lagarith/Huffy encoded AVIs :)

"faster" would be a RAM / processor issue. But in all honesty, your specs aren't that bad for a notebook (and upgrading them often sucks / isn't possible without major expenditure of money). Aside from making sure you're not running a lot of unwanted processes (spyware/adware/virus scan lately?) there isn't much else you can do. Maybe if you'd define slow for us we could help a bit more... it may just be that your perspective of time is vastly optimistic when it comes to what you're working with.

THX... :) well really it isn't all that slow, I just want to optimize and use time wisely instead of just waiting around waiting for something to load/render. Well my problems are this...:

1) When I first add a new file to the timeline, Vegas can freeze for 1 minute before being able to put it on the timeline

2) Vegas is slow when I magnify or diminish the timeline so I can better see the work I did

and 3) Rendering times are very slow.

I think it may be that I edit with MPG clips, in which case should I convert them to Huffy if it is so?

My pc has 768 DDR2 , and I'm using Vegas 5.0 , but still - my preview window needs to be played at least 10 times to catch up and to stop freezing the image. It doesn't have problems with long clips though, but when clips on timeline are crossing/changing,my preview window freezes for few secs. I'm using 680 MB for video preview window, but it's still like that... It's probably because of footage, because I'm using DivX footage. (please don't gimme that crap about Huffyuv or Lagarith, because my HDD is too small for those things.)

o come on...huffy/lararith isnt crap well maybe im not complaining cuz i have space...anyway for ur divx clips u should change the four cc code to divx if u havet already done so if u wanna still use them and to playback smoother drag a loop around the part u wanna preview and go to tools buil dynamic preview

I'm not sayin' it's crap , I'm just sayin' that I'm already sick of all those talks when people says to me : "Use Huffyuv or Lagarith!" . I'm just sayin' that I don't have enough space for those.

About DivX footage - I'm not complainin',just sayin' that Vegas might do some crap because of that.

Something else that may help is to turn off the Media Manager - I've never used it, at least, and I don't even know what it does. Since I figured out how to turn it off, Vegas boots faster and loads my projects faster, so you might wanna try it:

Options>Preferences>General>Uncheck "Enable Media Manager"

As Bashar said, try turning off unnecessary background programs. When you edit, just EDIT. don't surf the Internet, don't chat, just edit. That may help your speed a little.

I don't know that using a different codec would help all that much; you might as well convert some of the clips and see if it makes a difference.

If none of this really helps, and you still feel like you need Vegas to work faster, the only other thing I can recommend is to upgrade your RAM.
