Dual-Core CPU Usage

Postby OmniStrata » Sat Mar 10, 2007 2:13 pm

I want premiere to utilize both cores in my computer.

Opteron-165 socket 939

How do I go about doing this?

Speedfan is telling me that while I'm editing and exporting, it's only using 1 core 100% and the 2nd core at 25%.

What's going on?

In order to use both cores, a program must be specifically created to take advantage of them. I'm not sure about premiere pro, but I know older premieres aren't.

I know that premiere pro supports multi-core systems.
note sure about pro 1.0, but 1.5 (and I'm guessing 2.0 as well) has dual-core support.
I don't think there are any options that allow you to set how the load is split though.

from personal experience, pro 1.5 works much faster on a dual-core rig than a single-core rig.

Yep. (I have the same processor and premiere pro 1.5)
Lagarith also has an option to utilize dual cores for lossless encoding.

How would I use Lagarith in this manner?
Looking at its options in the Premiere I have now, it's not mentioned dual-core usage. [or does it only appear in pro?]

I'm not quite sure how Premiere works, but when you choose the codec, I would assume there is a configure button next to it. The window that pops up would have an option called "Use Multithreading". Enable that, should work

As far as i know... i could be wrong as i havn't read anything that definitely supports that (though when Premiere starts up it detects multiple cpus). i've notice significant performance improvements though.

Nah, I'm sure 6.5 does NOT HAVE any options to support multi-threading in its menus. [even checked the trusty help file, F1 key is my best friend]

But upon speedfan inspection, my comp never hits 100% while encoding and both processors weren't maxed.

Like, one would be 100% and the other would be 25%

that's OBVIOUSLY not going to be dual-core ready.

Prime95 needs a certain setup to burn both cores to 100% and though both programs are different, I'm totally sure that at worst, both cores would have similar loads if it was dual-core ready.
