Many ways to do it... and none work!

I want to record something from my screen, but it's getting really complicated. 'Tis a game for Windows.

I downloaded the ZDsoft Screen Recorder and ran the game - got only blackness with audio. So I disabled the Hardware Acceleration for my video board and the game won't open. Instead, it displays an error message related to "openGL". I scavenged around the game directory and found some .DAT files, but I have no clue about how to convert them. All my attempts using AviSynth and VDM so far have failed.

I've heard of openGL before but I had no idea what it actually does. Based on what I found on the Wikipedia, I'm not sure if I should install it since I already have DirectX 9. In other words, I'm an idiot.

The ideal solution in my case would be capturing from the screen (either being able to run the game w/o hardware accel or finding a way to capture the hardware overlay video) but if that's impossible, I'll be perfectly happy with reading the DAT files.

Thanks in advance for any and all help,

OpenGL is a graphics rendering standard. That's about it. It's a standard for putting graphics onto the screen.

Looking around for extraction tools for the specific game can often turn something up that can open the resource archives (in this case, the .DAT files) and unpack them - granted of course that this is a case of FMV or still images.

Which game is it?

FRAPS worked! The downside is having an entry for "Fraps Video Decoder" on the VirtualDub compression menu, but screw that, it worked.

The game was Pump It Up: The PREX 3 PC. I wanted to capture the Dignity steps for an AMV Hell 4 segment. Thank you all very much for the help and information on openGL. I'm a little less ignorant now =]
