What's the best compression method for a dell dimension 8300 which is short on space? :?:

we need more information than that.
cpu info (brand, model and clock speed)
ammount of footage you have, how much space you have and intended use of footage

I assume that you run winXP, correct me if i'm wrong.

if you intend to do video editing, it sounds like a second (or third, or n-th) hard drive would be a good investment.
preferably internal, but external can work too (usb 2.0 isn't really fast enough for any editing related task...but it's better than nothing)

That completely depends on the factors involved. If you use RGB-mode HuffYUV files it won't really matter. In fact, I do pretty much all my editing off a drive in an external USB 2.0 enclosure now. On mine the comp's bus and processor speeds are much more of a factor than the USB deal - heck, USB 2.0 is probably faster than what my comp is capable of handling on an internal (that's what I get for using a 6-year-old Celeron).

You should WMV as a very good option if you know what you are doing. It can give some great results with very little size.

you can't really say which method is best if you don't know how it's going to be used

Do you mean compressing video for use as source clips for your editing software, or do you mean compressing a finished AMV for internet distribution?

not quite
some codecs are ok for editing, like lagarith or huffyuv
the files will be big, but 33% to 66% smaller than uncompressed
these codecs are also lossless, meaning that you won't loose any quality when you compress your footage

Oh yeah! You CAN use compressed video....BUT! Encode them to Lossless, NOT DIVX/XIVD!!!
