It's better to buy the DVDs.

Look at the forum rules.

Thou shalt not use downloaded video footage to make AMVs.

And it IS an option for you, even if you're 12 years old and have to mow lawns to get money for a few DVDs.

Besides, I see you have a pending donation. Apparently you can get money from somewhere.

You shouldn't have a problem getting some DVDs just save your money ^_^

I'll awnser your question.
Fansubs and raws are not the same.
Fansubs have subtitles on them that you will have to crop to edit with.
That will take a big chunk away from the video.

Raws don't have any subs or watermarks on them therefore they would be the best choice of those 2.
The main choice is DVDs ofcourse ^_^

I just want to clarify that the quoted line is technically an ethical guideline rather than a hard and fast rule.

The AnimeMusicVideos.org Code of Ethics

If you wish to be a good netizen then you'd want to follow the Code. Using downloaded footage, while not banned, is frowned upon here. Especially if the DVDs are available either for sale or rent or borrowable. BTW, renting for footage is also on the fine line of ethical no-nos, but since this may be the only way of semi-legally obtaining footage from long out-of-print DVDs like Sailor Moon (aside from buying bootlegs), it's generally accepted. Borrowing is the best solution if you have an anime-owning rich friend willing to loan you DVDs since the anime is legally obtained and costs you little to nothing.

i dont see how raws vs fansubs is even a question... of course raws are better, you dont have to crop anything off, or change the AR to make it work...

but DVDs are in the end better than both sources

The DVD versions are sometimes improved over what has been broadcasted on TV. Another good reason to prefer DVDs over RAWs.

There are lots of online stores. Places like DeepDiscountDVD and SendIt are good places to look. You can check your favorite electronics store's website for DVDs that may not be in the nearest stores. Look in the Heads Up forum for sales and good deals from certain sites or stores. Just be careful - for every legitimate site out there, there's a site that sells bootlegs as well.

Yes, you were right to say sometimes. For example, for the R2 DVDs just before One Piece switched their broadcasts to wide screen HD they decided to stretch and crop the 4:3 footage so it looked wide screen.
