Windows XP Home - $39 and $139 - CompUSA - EXPIRED

EXPIRED

CompUSA is selling Windows XP Home upgrade and full versions with a $60 dollar instant rebate. This deal is valid from 12/31/06 to 1/6/07.

Windows XP Home Upgrade - $39

Windows XP Home Full - $139

What makes this deal even sweeter is that you get a free upgrade to Windows Vista Home Basic via mail for free (+$10 s/h). You need to purchase any of the two, go to following website, and mail in your upgrade order.

www.microsoft.com/techguarantee (choose your country)
North American redemption website

I must say that $50 for two operating systems is a hell of a deal. Once you receive the Vista DVD there is no rush to install it. Just enjoy XP for now and install Vista once the drivers and software mature.

I wish they had a similar deal for XP Pro, even without the Vista upgrade option. Still, this is a good deal.

Isn't the difference between home and Pro the pre-configured settings?

No, Windows XP Home Edition is a stripped down version of WinXP Professional (Microsoft likes to refer Pro as basically 'Home plus a superset of features for businesses and the like'). Although nearly all home users will not need the added features that Pro has over Home.

And if you were wondering, "Scalable processor support – up to two-way multi-processor support." means that Pro can support systems that have 2 physical CPU sockets (ala AMD's Quad FX platform) which Home cannot. This doesn't mean that you need to use WinXP Pro to have Dual Core support. Home Edition will work with multiple cores, so as long as they all are all on a single die/socket, Dual or Quad.
