avi to Xvid

When I tried opening an avi file into VirtualDubMod it gave me the error unrecognised file. So I tried loading it into DGIndex to see if I needed to do that first but that wouldn't even take the file in. How do I convert avi to Xvid?

your're probably missing a codec. Your avi file may already be encoded with xvid...but if you are looking to edit with this footage you shouldn't be using xvid.

your best bet is to browse through your footage (once you can get it to open in vdubmod) and make small clips in that...encoding those small clips with alossless codec such as lagarith or huffyuv.

get Gspot, then drag and drop your footage into that program.
it'l tell you (among other things) what codec it was encoded with.
Post the results (and right below "codec" is a status field...it should either say "codec is installed" or "codec is not installed", post that as well)

AVI is a <b>container format</b>.
DivX and XviD are <b>video codecs</b>.

Sorry I didn't explain right. This is the actual music video that I'm trying to convert.

Gspot had "dvsd/" for codec, then DVC/DV Video for name, and says codecs are installed, but since I've never heard of those codecs I'm even more confused now.

Thanks anyway.

dvsd is the fourCC code for general DV footage.

try this and see if that works

All the DV (codec) files that I've seen use what's called a DirectShow codec - and VDubMod won't read them. The trick is to use an AVS file.

Start Notepad and type one line into it:
directshowsource("path to AVI file")
Replace everything between the quotes with the complete path to your DV file. For example:
directshowsource("c:\work\myvideo.avi")

Save this Notepad file to a file with a name that has an avs suffix (like myvideo.avs).

(As an alternative to Notepad, you can use the script editor in VDubmod (under Tools).)

Start VDubMod and open that same avs file (File - Open video file...). You can proceed from there - if it works.

Read more about all this here.

The Panasonic DV codec that Kariudo linked to is a Video for Windows (VfW) DV codec as opposed to the default Microsoft DV codec which is for the DirectShow API. Installing the Panasonic DV codec will enable you to open a DV AVI file directly into VirtualDub/Mod without it throwing up the error message.

I personally do what TaranT suggests and go through AviSynth's DirectShowSource() function in an AVS file to frameserve the DV video to VirtualDubMod.
