no aliens, space-battling mecha, magical elves, or
naughty tentacles (essentially ruling out 90% of all anime).

There are mechs, and the song is instrumental, but I used the anime to match the mood and I told a story created by me outside of the anime itself.

This one's my political commentary. It's using a war anime, but I'm really not re-telling the story of the anime like it might appear.

I've watched another couple of suggestions.

Flint the Dwarf: I downloaded your "Consequences of War"
AMV. I didn't see the other one because you mentioned
it's instrumental and therefore it cannot be what I was
asking about (story-driven lyrics).

I didn't enjoy the video very much, mostly because the music
isn't to my liking and I found the middle discourse somewhat
jarring. Judging the video objectively, however, I can tell
you put a lot of effort into it and the timings, transitions and
choice of scenes are very good. I also like that you had
something to say in your AMV regarding the futility of war
(hope I got it right :)

Although you follow the lyrics pretty closely ("blood is on
our hands", "chains that bind", etc) it's still a song about
the nature of war in general, not about any particular
event within a war. There really isn't a story there.

Orwell: well... it was interesting. It's a well-made parody,
but there's no narrative whatsoever. So, doesn't qualify :)

I mentioned in a previous post "Don't stand so close to me".
Here's an AMV which attempts what I'm talking about:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHsaq18yQY0

(I don't know if the silly word filter will mess up the link,
this AMV is not on the org and banning the mention of
you-tube is downright stupid when trying to have a legit
discussion of material not available locally).

The video isn't very good, but the first half sort of succeeds
at what I'm asking for. The second half falls apart and the
story is not fulfilled to its conclusion, but the first couple
of minutes kinda hold it together, save for the obvious
fact that all the awkward onus is on the student and none
on the teacher. The scene in the car is a pretty fortunate
match.

I really appreciate your suggestions so far!

Pain of Salvation! The music is so fucking good, but no one want to make an amv with it. Here some bands, I want to see it in an amv:

Jack Slater
Pat Metheny (Group)
Comma
Atheist
Fuck on the beach
Voivod
Excrementory Grindfuckers

Just hearing the desription of the song, I started to picture Misato from NGE. You sure it couldn't be done? :D

Any song can be used to make a good AMV, if you have the right creative mind behind it.

Hurt by Johnny Cash....personally, I don't see how anyone could make an AMV to this song. I know that people have, but...

I was one of those people that thought that any song was AMVable with enough imagination and insanity, not to mention the love of a challenge. But I think I have indeed found a song that I really can't see putting an AMV to. "Pancreas" by Weird Al. Someone put it in a mix of a shitload of other songs for an Azumanga Daioh vid, but I haven't seen anyone use it by itself. Nor do I think anyone will. I'm not saying its impossible and can't be done. Anything is possible, but I just really can't see that song being used for an AMV. (And actually having it work.)

Annihilation - A Perfect Circle

It's a nice song... well it's boring to listen to it for more than over 2 minutes since it's the same thing over and over, that's why I qualify it for a non-AMV song, the only way it could be done is if it's a dull AMV, boring to watch, or is used as a "bridge" between 2 other songs.

But as a stand alone song I don't think it's possible.

Actually, that song is on my to do list of amv ideas to be made at some point. (as soon as I get the anime ripped to my comp) And it will be creepy. That's just one of those where you just need the right footage, right story, etc to make it interesting since you don't have fast paced exciting music to do it for you.

This video was THIS close <--> not to scale to using the Johnny Cash cover. His version is what I originally started with until I decided I preferred a different mix of the same song.

the numa numa song.

that song drives me up the wall, when my friend started playing it I ran to his stereo and made an attempt to trash it but he grabbed me. its annoying and it shouldn't be in an amv or anywhere.

With a few exceptions here and there, you won't see the majority of music from the Prog Rock/Metal genres in AMVs. Most songs are usually 6 minutes or over, anywhere up to 10-20 minutes, or even longer (I know one full song that's amazing, but it's 60 minutes long).

Not to say there aren't any shorter songs that could be adapted, and that's something I aim to do hopefully soon.

One time back in the days when I still used two VCRs and a DVD player, I had an ambition to make a Power Stone AMV with "Close To The Edge" by Yes, which is like an 18 minute song!!!!!! Now these days, I don't think I'll ever do something like that. I didn't even have all the Power Stone DVDs at the time the idea popped in my head (2002). I didn't put anything together or anything. I just had the idea one time, and dreamed of it. Imagine the pain and torture that would've been! Especially back in those days! Plus if I had made it on my comp, it would probably take up a shit load of gigabytes when exporting it from Adobe Premiere, and my computer would probably crash or something!

4 years 'til I've posted here, so...

just in general, most varieties of hardcore music don't endear themselves to AMVs. vocally, they would irritate the standard viewer, and the music's tendency for "beatdowns" would make for poor viewing (though if you're very innovative, it could be pulled off). doubtless there are many AMVs with hardcore bands, but I just wouldn't see them working well for the most part. I would like to be corrected mind.

corr, that was worth that wait.
