LCD Screen Effect

Postby DJ_Izumi » Tue Oct 03, 2006 3:04 am

I'm looking for suggestions on how to do an LCD screen effect, the desired result is so the footage looks like a closeup shot of an LCD display from an angle. Angle part is obvious but it's getting that subtle grid rendered out that confuses me, anyone have any suggestions?

How accurate of a effect do you want to create? For a simple reproduction, just layer a grid of black lines (horizontal + vertical) over the image. To go even further, you'd want to also duplicate the sub-pixels of the screen (red, green and blue). To see what I mean, get a good magnifying glass and look over your LCD (or even your CRT) screen. This article (primarily page 2 and 3) describes the basic structure of LCDs. And the Wikipedia pages on ClearType and Subpixel rendering have some nice pictures of an LCD's sub-pixels.

Oh, and if you replicate it too subtly, it may not be enough of an effect. Exaggeration is probably a good idea here. (Matrix, anyone?)

I'd like to be able to do it very accurately so I can have it appear as if I have a camera zoomed in close or panning acros a jumbo-tron of sorts.
