Haali/FFDShow problem

Postby Tashani » Mon Oct 02, 2006 3:27 am

Hello!

I seem to be having an issue with Windows Movie Maker 2.0. I'm aware that the program has a legecy for crashing, but I've been using the program for years, and it has never acted THIS buggy. Anyway, I think the issue has something to do with Haali Media Splitter and FFDShow. The reason? Because whenever I try to make a video, TONS of the FFDShow and Haali icons appear in my Icon Tray at the bottom right hand corner of the moniter (Y'know, next to the clock, etc.). This causes the program to freeze up and it says "Not Responding".

So, the normal responce here is: "Why don't you uninstall Haali and FFDShow?" Well, I tried that and even the .avi's, .mpg''s, and so on that I had BEFORE I installed these programs won't work if I uninstall.

My question now becomes: Where do I go from here? Is there a way for me to get rid of Haali/FFDShow and still salvage my video files? Is there simply a better (Free/Shareware) program I can use to make movies where this strange event doesn't occur? Please help me out, thank you.

Don't use lossy files in WMM. That's what's causing the problem. Use VirtualDub to cut clips from the videos and compress them with HuffYUV or Lagarith, and use those clips to edit with. Unless Haali's Media Splitter is set to split AVIs and ffdshow is set to decode HuffYUV, there shouldn't be an issue.

You have a few options here.

1. Download the latest version of ffdshow (and/or Haali Media Splitter, which shouldn't be causing the problem).

2. Disable some of ffdshow's decoding support for certain codecs and use alternatives instead. e.g. instead of using ffdshow's XviD/DivX decoding, install XviD and use it instead (you'll need to disable ffdshow's handling of Xvid/DivX content). Disabling ffdshow's redundant decoding of other codecs like MP3, WMV, MPEG, etc. may help greatly since many of these are already handled by codecs pre-installed by Windows.

3. Don't use MPG or XviD/DivX AVI files in WMM since these types of files are meant for playback and not for editing. Convert the scenes you need into clips using VirtualDub/Mod and encode them with a codec designed for editing in mind, like Huffyuv or Lagarith. Drawback here is that these Huffyuv or Lagarith AVI files take up much more hard drive space than MPG or Xvid/DivX files so you'd want to be very specific when making clips and avoid converting whole episodes if at all possible.

You could also try going into WMM's Compatibility tab (Tools > Options...) and unchecking ffdshow's Audio and Video decoders from that list.
