Codec problem - I think

Postby CrackTheSky » Fri Sep 15, 2006 2:36 pm

Ok. I made a video in Vegas and after reading AbsoluteDestiny's guide to the letter on compressing my .AVI file in VirtualDubMod, the video won't play back. Or, I should say, it plays back, but I don't see anything but black and the music is messed up. When I tried to open my file, the error message I got said something about "ad2mpegin.dll".

Is that enough information, or do you guys need more to be able to help me?

I should add that I compressed my video using the Xvid codec.

a few things that could help us help you:
filesize before compression (and codec, if applicable)

settings you used for xvid, as well as the target filesize
version of xvid
and media player you try to play it in

right click the file, select properties, hit the summary tab (advanced) and list the bitrate it has (if avaliable)

What version XviD did you use, what player are you using to try playing your file, and what is the complete error message?

How did you export from Vegas (before compressing with virtualdub)?

Also, try opening the compressed file in virtualdub/mod and post here whether or not it plays along with any eventual error messages.

That should be enough information to start with, and probably to finish with as well. Unless you used any kind of AVS script, in which case you could also post the script(s) here.

Hmmm...I'll tell you what I know/remember...

File size before compression: ~2.5GB

I exported the video from Vegas, using the HuffYUV codec...

When I compressed the file in VDM, I used the following XviD settings:
-A5 @ L5 (H.263 Quantization type, if that means anything to you guys)
-Twopass encoding type (the file in question is the first pass; I assumed that doing a second pass wouldn't be helpful in the least seeing as the first one doesn't work at all)

Umm...like I said, I followed AbsoluteDestiny's guide to the letter, so whatever he did in his guide is what I did.

I'm almost positive I have the latest version of XviD; it's version 1.0.3. I tried to play my video in both Real Player and Windows Media Player.

I *think* the error message was: "ad2mpegin.dll could not be located. Reinstalling the program may fix the error." I can't be sure, though, because it won't show up now; it just plays the blank file. That only happened when I opened it in Real Player, though; opening it in WMP simply gives me an error message like: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. One or more codecs required to play the file could not be found."

Opening it in VDM results in a black screen with the music playing regularly - not messed up.

And the AVS script I used to open my file in VDM before compressing it was this:

avisource("E:\Documents and Settings\Ben\Desktop\Music Vids\Amnesia in Comfort - Crack the Sky.avi")
smoothdeinterlace(tff=false,doublerate=false)
converttoyv12()
mftoon()
deen("a3d",4,10,12)
Crop(40, 0, -40, -0)
LanczosResize(512, 384)

Hope that's enough.

Unless you marked "full quality first pass" on the XviD options, the file is useless and won't play correctly. Do the 2nd pass (or a single-pass conversion if you prefer) and see if it works. If not, reinstall XviD and try again.

from what you gave, it sounds like it should work...but if you tried to compress it too much (and the bitrate was set too low as a result) you may not be able to play it.

if when encoding in vdub, you see the quantizer maxed out at the left end of the screen (advanced options-debug-display encoding status will show you the quantizers while encoding), you are trying to compress too much

Well, I was able to compress it into an MPEG-1 file instead, which is fine for now. I'll figure out why the XviD compression didn't work later...I just needed a reasonably-sized file by today because today's the deadline for a contest I want to enter. It'll do.

Thanks anyway for your help, I really appreciate it. I'll try and fix it before I put it up on this site.
