Ack- Technology challenged!!

Postby LeperDoctor » Fri Sep 08, 2006 11:09 pm

I'm using DVD decrypter to take a DVD and make it into a VOB; then I'm using VirtualDubMod to change the file extension name from VOB into AVI. However, I find the files that come out of the DubMod are massive- several GBs, which I could use for other things. <.< Is there a way to compress the movie files through either of these two programs?

Also, WWM doesn't play audio and images together when I piece them together- thus far I've creditted that to the large file sizes, but I'm wondering if WWM is good to use with avi files? I'd appreciate any pointers. ^^

that's one way to use dvd footage...but you probably want to remove the interlacing. this guide will help you along
and yes, a few GB per episode is reasonable (depending on what codec, if any, you use).

WMM can handle avi files (as long as it isn't compressed with codecs such as divx or xvid)
if your audio and video play at the same time (just not in sync, or the audio skips) then yeah...probably due to WMM/your computer in general having more information thrown at it than it can handle.

if you really are tight on HD space, you might want to consider bait and switch. (outlined in the guide above)
if you have a little more room you might want to try the method in this guide starting on page 18
just use xvid (or x.264 if you have it) instead

What I do, is after the VOBs are created, is take them into Vdub, then go through the episodes, and pick out the specific clips I want to use. That way, you don't have a monster AVI, and the time you have to spend in your editing program, scrounging for clips, is massivly cut down.

Thanks!!

Kariudo: I looked at the guide before, and found it to be quite useful. It's the third or forth time that guide has been suggested to me, and the previous times I looked at it and thought, "What good is this? Just a table with stuff..." I didn't actually realize they were links until I moved my mouse over one. <.<;; But it is a very useful guide!!

Radical: I slice apart the files in WMM, but I guess the source files are still to big. <.< Is there a specific way, for VirtualDub, that allows you to only convert small files at a time like you mentioned? I don't know how....>.>

Oh, wow!! That's an awesome guide- I didn't check it out at first because you said it was good if you have lots of space, but I just skimmed it and they give lots of good pointers/tips!! I'm definitely reading this tonight. Thanks!! *Hugs*
