Error loading video file into VirtualDub

Postby dawgbowl » Fri Aug 11, 2006 12:53 pm

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format "WMV3" (Unknown)

Is there something else I need so I can edit this file? I can view it normally, but I cannot open it in premiere (no surprise there I guess) or VirtualDub.

Im still new to AMV creation, mainly because I finally have a computer that can run premiere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

You'll need to use AviSynth to load that into VirtualDub and/or Premiere. Although WMV3 and most lossy compressed formats aren't good for editing. Not to mention the quality is probably not the best either. Your best bet is to load it into VirtualDub with AviSynth and convert to a lossless format like Uncompressed RGB, Huffyuv or Lagarith.

Willen has it right on the money. Just to elaborate:

If you don't have these programs/codecs already, nab 'em:

CCCP
[URL=

VirtualDubMod
HuffYUV
Lagarith (Alternative to HuffYUV)

In VirtualDubMod's Open File window, set the drop-down menu that says [None] to DirectShowSource. Then open the file you're trying to open. It should open just fine. Encode clips to either of the lossless codecs and there ya go.

I can get it to open in virtualDub using DirectShowSource, However when I go to play/save the file in any of those formats the program quickly closes and I'm left with a file about 16,000 KB that does nothing.

thats a picture of where I am currently stuck, it seems to open the first frame but can't do anything more.

I have installed the AMVapp so I have all of those applications.

I always thought all AVIs were the same, what a terrible misconception.

Wow, really is no edit button. Well I was also going to add what is preferred for beginners for AMVs... should I try and switch over to vegas or will it really not make much of a difference.

and is After Effects worth it?

just simple questions, from a simple noob.

AVI, MKV, OGM... they're all just containers. It's what's in them that changes so much, and makes it a pain to edit with.

As for compatibility mode, I wouldn't really recommend it. There shouldn't be a need.

As for why it crashes as soon as you hit save... hmm. If it's having trouble seeking in DSS mode... it could be a decoder conflict. As in, two decoders trying to decode the exact same thing. Computers don't like it when that happens.

Here, try this.

http://cccp.mayoko.net/CCCP-Insurgent-2006-01-01.exe

Run that program. Do a test render on the file you're trying to feed into VirtualDub. It'll output a bunch of information, like what decoders are trying to turn on. Plus, the program lists all of the decoders installed on your computer, so it should be easier to see what's there.

It means there's nothing wrong from a decoding perspective--scanning one of my WMV9 MKVs, it returned pretty much the exact same result.

Damn. Did you disable all audio streams before attempting to save? Not sure if that'll even help, but it's all I'm really coming up with.

Not that I know of, oh well maybe there is some sort of security embeded in the file or something, because I seem to have trouble doing ANYTHING with RAW files.

gah, so troublesome... I can work with subtitled footage just fine, but RAW footage just doesn't work at all. (I am aware for best results I should buy the series, but A. it doesn't exist yet, and B. Im still learning)

Copy protection is rarely an issue (especially with fansubs and RAW footage, since that's already illegal distribution anyways) but when that does happen, the error messages tell you that it's a protection issue. You could be having a memory conflict, or the source file might simply be corrupt. But try removing the audio. If the broken data is in the audio stream, there may still be hope for your video.

Another possible problem, since it's internet footage, is that whoever encoded the video did something stupid with the fourcc tags. In that case, open the videos with GSpot and see what it tells you.
And God spoke unto the Chicken, and He said: "Thou shalt crosseth the road", and the Chicken did cross the road, and there was much rejoicing.
