Need help deciding on an editor.

Postby Chaos__Raven » Fri Jul 28, 2006 8:04 pm

I am good at editing, and I want to be better at AMVs. But I need suggestions. I need a program with a layout similar to Windows Movie maker, But with an overlay track. I also want the cut up clips option like movie maker. And it cant be too laggy. If anyone can help I would kiss their feet....

Well if you think about it, WMM does look like most other editers, track, preview box, clip bank. It's rather general.

Magix's display is somewhat similar to WMM's, except that the preview window is on the left and the media pool (think of it as Collections with everything pre-imported) is on the right. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by overlay track, but each of the timelines can be used for video / audio / pictures / titles / alpha channels / anything else I've missed. The official website for each NLE will probably have some screenshots on it somewhere, so check a couple out and see if anynthing takes your fancy. Most of them are pretty similar anyway.

Magix does also have a clip-cutting option, but I don't know how it compares to WMM's.

Not to mention the fact you can re-arange the windows to look however you want in most NLEs...

No matter how people may badmouth WMM, I always thought it had a very clean set up. It just doesn't run worth beans.

That being the case, I second Magix. It's the program I ended up upgrading to when I "grew out" of WMM2, and I'm hooked on it now. It's pretty cheap for a good editor, too. You shouldn't have to pay more than fifty dollars if you look in the right place.

Hope that helps.

Plenty of closeups, but not much in the way of full-screen shots. If you're going to go for Magix, get the UK versions rather than the US ones. MEP10 is based on two different programs depending on which version you buy, and for once it's not the UK getting shafted.

Full-screen shot, MEP10+ UK.

I personally like Sony Vegas.

I found it relatively easy to transition from WMM to Vegas.

Wow. Magix is pretty.

And yeah. Vegas is good. Its ~$600, but good. No clip maker though. You've gotta make your own. Unless it does have one that Ive never noticed.

There's a cheap version, Vegas Movie Studio. Mayhap not as powerful as the full version, but a lot cheaper (I paid just over $100CND total on Amazon for it) and with more capabilities than WMM. It won't make clips the way WMM does, though it's somewhat easy to pick out clips from your imported media and drop it onto the timeline (somewhat--I keep managing to select the entire file when I try. I suppose there's a keyboard shortcut I should learn). I do find it easier to work with than WMM though. And the VSM has an interactive tutorial that I find invaluable for learning different tasks.

Final Cut Pro is your God... if you own a mac.

If not, Premiere has always been good for me.

Oh, I forgot I bought the Vegas 6.0 + Vegas DVD Architecht. Yeah. Regular Vegas is only 450, or like Jayn_Newell said, always Vegas Movie Sudio.

I've seen Vegas 6 on Newegg.com for as cheap as $250.00 with no s/h.

As for the clip maker, that is what the trimmer is for. You get to make your own clips xD
I find the trimmer to be a lot easier to use than the regular clip maker the WMM provided. It's much more presice.

Also, with Vegas, you can download a 30 days trial

There are aren't that many restrictions really. No Mpeg renders, only 30 MP3 renders, etc...

Nothing to really slow you down.

I seriously sugest giving it a go.
'Tis fun.
