How do I shrink avi size?

Postby BlueUtopiah » Sun Jul 23, 2006 6:45 pm

Hi -

I just finished my first AMV, editing with Canopus DVStorm2, and the final avi came out to 1gig (4 1/2 minutes of video).

Does anyone know of a way for me to shrink the avi so that I can post the AMV here on this site? I would greatly appreciate any help/suggestions.

Thanks:

Compress it in VDubMod.

Thanks!

Another question (please bear with me) Are there any tutorials, guides, etc to using it, or is it a relatively simple program to use? (kind of like you just drop the avi in and adjust it).

for compression and things like it are very simple. open a video in it, set your compression options, filters if you want any, crop the video, remove sections of it by selecting them and hitting delete, ect.
when your done, you just save it. theres more advanced things you can do in it once you learn it well enough. its like a tiny god.

It is very easy to use. Get xvid and in the top menu where you see "File, Edit, etc.." you'll see an option called "Video". In Video scroll down to where it says "compression" and select that. After the compression menu pops up.. select xvid and on the left you will see an option called "configure"

after you are in the configure window.. you might want to look at this guide for compresssion..

http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/xvid.html

after you select the quality you want.. make sure you compress your audio. In Virtualdub go to the menu item called "audio" then select "full processing mode".. then you will get the option to compress your audio.. go back to the top menu and select "audio" then scroll down to where it says compression.. select LAME compression witch you can get in the AMVapp.. witch you can get here..

http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ ... mvapp.html

and choose the bitrate you want.. then when all done go to "file" "save as avi" then just save it.

In VirtualDubMod to compress the audio go to the menu item called "Streams".. select "steam list".. in there right click the available stream.. select "full processing mode".. right click the available stream again.. then go to "compression" then choose lame then choose how many kbs you want it..

after that go to "save as..." then save it.. ok I don't know if I explained that well but hope that helps!

You have the same video indexed twice, and i'm pretty sure you didn't compress your audio. Unless that video is like 11 minutes long or has constant crazy effects throughout, it shouldn't be that big.

I know about the double indexing - my computer decided to crash as I was filling out the form and I thought it was lost, so I filled out another one. I have a request to delete the first entry, but I guess they haven't gotten to it yet, (hopefully they will soon).

As far as the audio compression - do you mean on the video that's uploaded? Because I did compress the whole thing down to about 96mb, and the audio sounded fine to me.

For some reason, the Canopus renders strangely large avis. There's alot of drawbacks to using it, but I like the interface.

What is the format of the audio? not how it sounds. the format.

You should be able to get that video size down by 50MB without sacrificing any quality.

When it comes from the Canopus, it's .wav (and I know .wavs are huge). Unfortuantely, my editing system is very tempermental, so I don't really mess around with compressing anything, I'm just happy when it does what its suppossed to.

I guess I could compress it again in Dvix, but it's already uploaded, I'm not sure I should go through the whole process again (especially since I already have a double entry).

Is the size of my current video a problem? Because I've had a few friends upload it and so far I haven't had any complaints.

If it's good and it's whored out enough, you'll get downloads, but the size may put off the person that randomly grabs stuff. Especially since that size is usually more suited to 12 minute long videos. It's not a problem perse, it just isn't that big of a help if you want to be seen, which i gather you do since you uploaded your video here.

No, you're totally right. I messed around with Divx for a little bit and actually got the size down to about 30mb. I just don't know about removing this video and reuploading it, because it seems to be a bit complicated and time consuming.

Hey, this is my first AMV, and it's a learing process. You've been awesome with all the advice, I've really never had to compress avis before, so now I know for the next AMV.
