...

Premiere is a timeline based nonlinear video editing suite. After Effects, like it says in its name, is for adding certain effects afterwards. Although many people use the two in conjunction at the same time. They are not at all the same.

I have heard of people using AE entirely to make videos, I have never tried. I've just used it for its shattering effects. I assume it would be mich more difficult to use like that than premiere.

Exactly. Unless you have an ungodly amount of RAM you'd have to continuously create the basis for effects on a sequence, export that sequence, and re-inport it to be able to continue editing.

AE is more for creating short sequences and exporting them into premiere to edit with; though, as i mentioned above, you sometimes have to export several AE projects back into AE to get what you need to put back into Premiere.

Thank you so much, I will definately get premiere then... now that I think about it, both of their names make the choice obvious. WOW. @_@
but You see, I had been trying to decide for a while, since a lot of people have differing opinions on this sort of thing, and they all have their favorites... I've never gotten a straight answer until now. Some of my favorite AMVS have been made entirely with after effects... Some with premiere... and some with both. So I was torn, and was unsure which would be easier, even though I wanted fancy things too. It seems it will take me a while to get used to using it, I can tell already XD
I'll buy After effects... er... after. >.>

and also... What version of premiere do you reccomend for someone who is just starting out using it, but still wants to make quality work? Is pro too difficult? What's the most recent premiere?

Thank you so much for your help. X3

I only use Premiere 7.0 which is a little hard to get used to, but very easy once you do(at least for me), but many people on this site swear by 6.0 and 6.5.

The most recent is 2.0, but I haven't found any reason to upgrade yet.

Hate to double poste but:

Premiere 7.0 is known as Premiere Pro. There is also Premiere Pro 1.5 I believe, but I don't know any specifics.

While I have access to Pro legally, I am one of those that swears by 6.0.

It's very helpful of you guys to keep giving me info, since my b-day is in two days and I need to hurry and decide ^^
Can some nice person here give me a few details about the slightly older version that might make them better, or easier to manipulate than a newer version like pro?

I also use Premiere 6.x over Premiere Pro. I find that Premiere Pro is slow, horribly buggy, freezes up on me, and has numerous shorcomings that the older premiere did not have. To its credit though, its got a much more modern looking interface, and has more features, and its a lot more refined. If only it worked.

Unfortunately, the older Premiere is no longer available commercially. Your best bet at obtaining it would probably be ebay, where it usually goes for a rather good price, but there you have to be particularly careful about whether you are getting a legit version of it, or just a pirated CD-R.

There is also Premiere Elements, which is a toned down version of Premiere Pro... with most of the same faults.

Other popular editors are Magix and Vegas.

Thanks for more helpful info... I think I will browse around on E-bay for it, or give Premiere pro/elements a try... but I think I'll go with the older and less complicated one before I get a new one.

and your avatar is adorable ^^

I hate to disagree. Premiere Pro runs like a champ for me. It only crashed on me once but that was because I messed up some AVI synth stuff in regards to memory. In all honesty, I find it works for me just as good as Windows Movie Maker did back when I started editing AMVs (when WMM decided to work and not freeze :x.

I cannot speak for Premiere 6.x since I've never used it.

I do suggest staying away from 2.0. It seems much more complex.

If you want cheap, I suggest trying Elements. It's not a great program, but I think it will surfice.

I use premiere pro 1.5 and it works fine for me. Just don't try to import any DivX/XviD files directly into it (gotta use an avs script).
