Tv tuner help

Postby siragin » Wed May 03, 2006 6:04 pm

A few months ago i bought an external tv tuner so i could record my plastation 2 games while i was playing it so i could make my own videos with them. the problem is it looks fine at 350 x 240 but at 640 x 480 or higher it looks like crap. the best i could make the footage look was like a vhs tape. how do i get it to look like it does on the game (like it is when i'm playing it on tv? the tuner is hooked up by USB.

I'll simply refer you to this forum. That should help you out quite a lot, assuming you have a DVD drive. Good luck.

Not what i was looking for but thanks any way. the games i was going to make videos with has custom caracters that you can make and save them to a memory card. if i use the suggestions from the forum i won't be able to use my custom characters.

What type of connection are you capturing from? (S-Video, RCA composite, or RF cable)

It also wouldn't hurt to list what brand and model your capture device is. That especially determines the quality you can expect.

It would also help to know what your source actually is so you won't get disapointed if it turns out not to be acceptible for this site..

I believe Bashar was referring to a discussion (or a rule, I can't rememeber which and I can't find it now), that stated that video game play footage is not suited for this website. Certain video game cutscense are accepted, but not the actual gameplay. This may or may not affect your situation.

However, with your capture issue, I fear you may be severely limited in terms of quality because your box is USB. There may be no other way around this except better hardware. But we still could use some more info, like what specific model your using. And some other questions I have...

Why 350x240? Is that the largest size it will capture? And what program(s) are you using to capture and then enlarge the video? Have you tried capturing at 320x240 and then enlarging?

By not using an analog TV tuner. The only way to get your output footage from a PS2, that's assuming you want game footage and everything, not just ripping FMVs, is to get RGB out and a card capable of capturing RGB.

Check the capture software: maybe there is an option(s) for higher size or bitrate. If not, then you probably need new hardware.

The (very) good: Canopus ADVC55 or ADVC110. Requires Firewire port on the PC and S-Video on the PS2. Captures 720x480 in DV codec. Cost $200-$300.

The adequate: Hauppage WINTV-PVR-150. Internal PCI card, captures 720x480 in MPEG2. Includes TV tuner. Cost approx $100.

Guys, composite and S-Video just kinda SUCK. It's what you get when you capture from those cables.

The only real way to get a decent capture from a PS2 is to use it's RGB out and capture, then it'll dump a much cleaner, true 640x480 VGA image instead of a lesser, for TV format.

If you're refering to using a 75ohm co-ax TV cable, using an RF adaptor, that would actually be the WORST option.

You're right, but what's it going to cost? Component video (RGB) capture is pretty much limited to professional gear. Canopus has some products, like the ADVC-500, but they start at $1200 and go up from there.

S-video is still pretty good. Basically, it's 480i (S-video) vs 480p (RGB, PS2).

BTW, there is a box from ADS Tech called the Pyro A/V Link which claims to capture component video (cost about $200). But it's the old component video - interlaced YUV - not true RGB. More about that here.

hmm. my computer has a windows firewall on it. don't know if that means it has a firewall port on it, if it does i have no idea were it is. can't tell you what the name of the tv tuner is because i am on another computer. i think its called gadmie or something like that. the tv tuner itself is connected with a usb cable, but i can connect other devices to the tv tuner by the s-video thing, a cable ready line and those three red white and yellow cords like when you connect a dvd player to your tv. i could use either of those but i don't think the ps2 has a s-video link. the tv tuner can capture up to 720 x 480. at first i said 350 x 240 but i meant 320 x 240 sorry. but i does look a lot better when i capture it at 320 x 240 then save it at 640 x 480, but it looks like when you're looking at video game clips that be on the web site. it looks good to me but it doesn't look like it does when i'm playing it on tv. i'm using wmm, windows media encoder, and vegas studios 6 to capture it.

Not "firewall"...Firewire.
Read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewire
