This is a very short (20 seconds) intro for my section. I'm primarly interested in aspect ratio 640x360 vs 640x480. I'm leaning towards widescreen myself but I'm still open.

Standard

I'm on a public comp but I'll grab it as soon as I can, probably tonight or tomarrow (I have to pay $1 per half hour for internet on my laptop.)

640x360 seems like a pretty small resolution to be editing at, what's the resolution of the source DVD?

ooh Nausica >3

I'm about halfway through my segment... taking longer than I anticipated since I'm pretty much editing a little at a time during my lunchbreak at work every day on my laptop ;p As for the theme, I'm staying with the Journey overall theme, but it'll also be a profile on the main character Kino. I actually start the video with her as a child and show how she starts her journey, and why, then as the music picks up I kick into her actual journey.

Synching some of this music however....particularly the faster parts toward the end.... will be.....interesting.

At first I thought this segment was just ok, but as i've been working on it, I've actually grown to like the music quite a bit. I might even volunteer for another segment after I finish this part. I just got my Wisper of the heart DVD (my all time favorite Ghibli movie), and itching to do something with it ;p

DVD? Right, right, DVD. Ummm... So widescreen or standard? Anybody? Anybody at all?

In all seriousness if the fansubs won't cut it, which they may not, I'll have to switch sources or delay production a couple of months 'til I've got the money to pick up the complete set. Either opinion is viable, twenty seconds of editting isn't exactly a lot of work to scrap and the wait might not be too long if we really want Samurai 7 in that spot.

That would be awesome. I <3 your fast server. :P

I uploaded coffee's beta just a few days ago for Oto, so here it is: http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1C2X ... XBT4ZFI4YF

Sorry that I've been away for a bit! (You can usually still find me on AIM though.) I'll hopefully have some comments and stuff tonight.

ack! I just noticed Krtz got a segment that I originally thought was part of my segment >.> I thought my segment was 2 mins long. Howd that mixup happen.... probably assumed I was getting the whole section since Pen-pen was originally doing both. awell I think I can modify my plan to not include it without hurting the vid too much... just means I can't have that action segment at the end I was planning to do to that fast part. bummers. In that case i'm actually about 4/5th done. on the upside I didn't actually do any editing to that part yet.

The fansub sources look overly filtered for my taste >.>

Why don't you rent the DVDs on netflix just for the project? If you have not signed up with them yet, You can get 2 weeks free for trying them. (I can send you a gift certificate from my account if needed, but I think the offer stands if you just visit their site aswell) Thats one way to get your hands on the clean dvd source without having any money to buy them. You may need a credit card to sign up though... it doesn't get charged if you cancel after the 2 weeks.

and I think I like widescreen.

Coffee:

I actually didn't have much problem with the quality, generally speaking it looks good to me.

My main complaint, I guess, is that I'm completely clueless as to where this is going. I'm told that Samurai 7 might not be the only option here but frankly, I'd like to know where you're going with it before suggesting further alternatives. All I can say is that it looks... interesting. There's room for visuals and room for possible conceptual oddness there.

Otherwise, it needs 'steam'. More of it. :P Mayhaps a somewhat finer cut would pick up the pacing a little; I dare say it appears a bit slow now. Internal sync - well, Jasper mentioned that, so perhaps she may elaborate on it more >__>

So, perhaps you could expand a bit on what the plan is here, or I demand more beta before passing any real judgement! :)

Still library computer bound, but not for much longer.

As much as I hate chipping in without knowing exactly what's going on, chances are I'm not going to dig the 2 dollers of tip money (My only cold hard cash, stranded in a small town many hundreds of miles away from my bank) take a bus across town and pay for a few grubby moments of internet access in a basement like a $2...

ahem.

Anyways: As far as AR goes all the widescreen will have to be converted to 4:3 at the end anyways. While some pull it off (Beo's "Dead to the World") our project, being one single song, would be hampared by AR changes more then the extra work/loss of detail.

I belive there have already been several segments that started out widescreen. I prefer pan and scan but other people might have difrent ideas as to the best way to go about it. Keep in mind that this is somthing that happens to every movie eventually, so it can't be that bad.

As far as fansubbs go I'm going to leave it open. If we can get good enough quality then it's fine. The best course of action would be to to a test recompress. I would prefer netflix but we'll see.

That's all for now.

Ok barring any unforseen circumstances (Please God, just this once?) I will be back in Grinnell by 4/5/06. This means I will have access to all the project files again and space to store stuff. Also I hyped to start editing again so expect a flurry of activity.

On another note I should really invest in Amerivest Propperties INC. (AMV) cause I see the stock data all the time.

Later,
Soren.

I'll be out of town for a week, so no editing for me during this time.

however, I bring a parting gift to hold you guys over till I get back ;p

Project Life Journey segment beta 1

Its just a simple crop to 4:3, so theres a few scenes that are not positioned nicely on the screen, I'll be pan & scanning those later for the final.

THe very begining is not set in stone, since I wasn't 100% sure where my track started and ended at the time I started editing ;p I only had a general idea.

everything after the second quick fade collague is not yet edited.

That's great; I like it a lot. :D Especially everything between 1:00 and 1:30. The pan and scan looks pretty good. If I catch you online I'll probably have some more thoughts. Can't wait for the full beta!

As for me, I'm starting to ease back into AMVs now. Kinda took an official AMV hiatus over the past month. The good news is that I've got my footage all set up and ready to go. The bad news is that I've got a big solo project competing for time... and that AP exams are coming up again soon...

EDIT: oh yeah, I should mention this before I somehow forget: be careful of what you speed up. Don't want people to look like they're having spasms now. :P

Wow.

I'm very impressed, actually. I can't even start criticizing it yet, because my initial impressive of it was thoroughly positive. Great storytelling, and I think it puts into focus once again what this project is all about! :)

EDIT: Yea, the sped-up things sometimes work great and sometimes end up being unintentionally funny. Some tweaking in that direction is needed I think :P

yea I kinda quickly changed most of the speed up parts so they didn;t look like they were talking a million words per minute right before I uploaded it, so I'm sure there are still spots that still need tweaking.

If needed, I'll remove lipflap intirely from some of them before the final.
